First, do you have the pinkslip? If yes, then that's all you need.
You will have to pay all the back reg fee's which will probably be expensive.
If you don't have the pinkslip, you need to locate the owner of record and either get the pink from him (her) or have them fill out and sign the necessary forms from the DMV to release liability and transfer owneship to you.
FYI, your back reg fee's might be more than the truck is worth.
There may not be any existing DMV paperwork if the truck hasn't been registered in 7 years. EZ way to find out: Go to the CA DMV's website and run the VIN, or call the DMV's 800 number.
What is the last year of the tag on the rear plate? If you have a Certificate of Non-Op, there is nothing to worry about.
If you don't make an appointment with the DMV, you may have to stand in line for hours...and hours...and hours.
If you belong to AAA, they have the same services as the DMV with friendlier people. No appointment necessary, the wait is faaar less, especially if you get there when they open.
btw: CA requires expensive to register Commercial plates on trucks unless a permanent camper/shell is present. Fees are prolly faaar less on a '65, then they are for the oversized tub in my sig pic (350 bucks for 2012 tags).
