Took off valve cover to see why running rough and there was no pushrod for the intake valve on cylinder #7. the previous owner had the rod jump out when lugging, but replaced it with a new one. It was still protruding thru the head. This time it must have slipped inside. Is this possible? Can I leave it there? How do I prevent it from happening again? (1985 460 f-250 )
Boy, that's weird. It might have slipped down into the lifter valley or even down into the pan although I think the pan is highly unlikely. It might also somehow popped up into the head and is laying down in a puddle of oil so you can't see it.
I would worry about why this has happened twice. Maybe the stud that the rocker sits on is lifting out? I don't know Ford engines that well, but a lot of Chevies have pressed(not screwed) in rocker studs which can work their way out under stress or just because. When this happens the rod can slip out.
I would recommend checking the stud for correct height. tehn you should probably remoce the intake and check in the lifter valley to see if the rod is laying down there. Hope so. Not a lot of damge to do in the lifter valley as long as the rod stays put. Down in the engine it has to pass the cam(and damage it) and then the crank(and damage that). So let's hope it is in the head or the valley.
If your heads are stock they should have just a bolt that goes through the center of the rocker arm and fulcrum into the head. So I guess the bolt is not just backing off and the rocker arm is not worn out where the pushrod rides.
As to why this has happened twice Maybe a weak lifter that is collapsing, somewhat at certain times to where it is increasing your vavletrain clearence enough to sling the pushrod out.
Well I also have a 1985 e350 460 and did the same took off the vaulve cover found #7 pushrod bent im not sure why myself I would try a magnet and see if I could get lucky good luck

Sounds like some heads have received some work (like replacement valves) without making sure that every thing is correct.
Valve seat to valve to rocker.
This is a 1985 ambulance with low miles it has never seen any head work looks as if the rocker may have some wear im just going to change both and see what happens thanks

A worn lifter or cam lobe would cause some extra pay in the system where the rod could fall out. I am almost betting that the pushrod is lying in the valley under the intake. Probably bent.
