i took my steering column apart to replace the upper column berring and the metal sleeve that sits directly on top of the berring has a split in it is that normal and it has sharp edge on it? and could that be causing the slop in my steering wheel and not the berring? if not how the heck do i get the berring out of the column?
any idea on this? i am going to have to order this part from n.p.d. because my local ford dealership wont order the part for some reason so i have to order it on my own and i want to make shure it is that sleeve i need.

If you are talking about the cone part, then yes it is supposed to be split. This is a picture from a 97 F-350.
As far as removing the bearing I used a small screw driver to work it out.
It took a few minutes but it came right out.
Looking at your signature, I'm not sure what truck you are talking about, I am assuming it's the 95.
yes it is for the 95 and yes that was the pitcure i was looking for-even the ford dealership said that it wasnt to have a split in it. i already orderd the cone looks like i will be ordering a bearing to. thanks for the help
ok i figured out it is the lower bearing that is bad. i am going to replace both bearings tho it is already tore apart so i am probley better off. but the upper bearing wont come out any tips to getting it off? and how do i go about gettin the lower bearing out to?

Try this link, navigate your way to the Steering Section (11).
got all the parts today and now i cant get the part that holds the bearings back on like it is hitting something but i cant see what the tilt latches are out of the road as far as i can tell. i messed with it for about a hour with no luck-now what should i try? and when i took it off the little gear at the end of the key switch fell out how does it go back in?

2005f-150,
I'm not really sure what parts your talking about, my experience is with the upper bearing only.
Go the Section 11 in the Bronco link I sent you eariler.
Scroll down to the bottom where the "Disassemble/Assembly section is and have a look there. It tells you how to replace the bearings.
