Ok guys I think I've come to my sin es amd understand what y'all have been saying an I see that what I have been hearing is a load of bs. So I'm going to re-route this build.
I'm throwing out the cummins swap. It would be nice but when I got off my lazy a$$ and started callin around amd doing sow hard research it is false that that is the beter way to go.
I cam make the same hp out of what I have for less than half the money and half the work.
Sorry for the inconviemce on that part
Spooooooo!!!
Idi build like I originally planned.
1- I need a turbo, I'll pm a few ppl on here an hi a few jy's,
I'll start am official idi build thread an try to keep it straight and true amd hopefully do this right. I appreciate u guys chiming in
most pepole dont know that a cummins 12 v with out a intercooler only makes 160 hp stock less them a na idi
yes, but they have a plethura of performance parts that almost any body can install and they can make 400+hp with simple fuel mods. stock turbo, intake, exhaust.

But I'd still much rather be indirectly injecting than cummin or powerstrokin
If the Cummins swap was ~really that awesome and affordable then everyone would have one... folks keep building IDI's because they are also good engines and meet their needs just fine at a lower cost and far greater availability. There is no "one" right answer, there are two "good" answers!
Forgive my overall ignorance of diesel's in general having been a gasser shade-tree mechanic all my life, and a FoMoCo lover
But, it seems both the 6.9 and the 7.3 are all-in-all very good engines- both have some weaknesses, but I think the 6.9 is the better engine because the 7.3 has the cavitation issue...which doesn't seem possible to fix, while the 6.9 seems to have rocker issues? that seems much easier to fix...and I believe I read somewhere that the '87 6.9 had fixed rockers and/or you could use 7.3 rockers?
Anyway, I have a '90 7.3 and it's been bulletproof even running WVO with no other mods!?
I even put a wicked mix of lamp oil, kero, WMO, WVO, ATF, some RUG, all in the tank at one time and it ate it!?
F&^$#$# Bulletproof!
It rolls 1,000+ miles a week, and it may not last another day but it's already paid for itself three times and runs for free basically.
Can you shave the heads on the 6.9/7.3 for a little higher compression?
What about headers? do those help in a diesel?
The Cummins and Powerstrokes seem to be very expensive to fix or hop-up...
I got my beater off Craigslist for $1,100 which included two full tanks of diesel and an extra IP...and there are many other deals on CL around here for 6.9/7.3's going from $1,000-$2,500 which are great deals...I even saw a 7.3L long block on there for $200!? I should've grab it but somebody got there before me.
yeah what racinDrummin said. turbo it or your wasting your time and our time . u can turn the fuel up slightly like 1 flat on a n/a, that will give it better throttle response and maybe a little smoke but that's it. boost it, and thank us later. pete
There's a million people on here who have put larger exhaust on, turned the fuel up, and have different air intakes on there trucks to get just a little more power. These are the same mods I would do if I wanted more power and didn't have tons of money. So if you feel up to it go for it. There not a waist of time if you do your research and realize what your going to get for your time and money. If your truck hasn't been tuned up in a while I would start there.
I hate it when people come up to me when I'm in my truck with remarks like " Oh, let's see what this old idi's got,' like it's a complete turd cause it aint turbo'd. Just cause it ain't a cummapart or a stroke doesn't make it a pos. I like it when I tell them my truck actually only makes about 30 horse less than a stock stroke. Can't wait till she's turbo'd
And the funniest thing is when these guys try to make their newer trucks smoke with chips n chit, and my truck rolls more coal than almost anybodies around, and I don't like it, cause it's just more EGT's and burnt fuel....lol
