I have an '88 F-150 4x4 with a 302. How do I know which trans I have? I don't think it has overdrive. It doesn't have the yellow dash button for OD and even with 35s I still turn around 3k rpm going down the highway. I would like to swap in a trans with overdrive. What trans would I need and what all would I need? Would I have to change the computor? Thanks!!
On your door jamb there will be a trans code along with your rear end code and everything. If you want an OD trans there are a couple options, but would you want to keep an automatic or swap to a manual?
Ok, the door tag says "K" and I counted 17 bolts, so I guess that means C6. What automatic trans with overdrive could I swap in place of the c6 and mate to my transfer case?
It'd be more involved than a bolt-on swap, probably would involve moving the tranny mount cross member forward or back, then there is the mechanical linkage from the throttle cable down to the transmission.
It is exceedingly important that linkage be installed & adjusted properly to avoid burning up an AOD.
1988 F150 with a 302 is going to be computer-controlled EFI. I think I've read out here somewhere on FTE about people hooking up an AOD to such a setup (to my knowledge, Ford would have given you a computer-controlled E40D and not an AOD which was used on non-computer-controlled drivetrains, generally with carbs) and I remember it involving aftermarket accessories, possibly a Lokar cable or something like that. It will take some custom fabrication and you need to do your homework first.
The FoMoCo 1980/89 Light Truck Parts Catalog lists several door codes for automatic overdrive transmissions.
Amongst them:
Code T, used 1981/1989 (and possibly longer but I have no way to verify that)
Is either the F10D, AOD, T50D, A4LD
Code Y, used 1985/89 (and possibly longer, as above)
Described as a 4-speed Automatic (O/D)
Code 7, used in 1985
Described as a 4-speed Automatic
In '88 behind a 302 it would have been an AOD or a C6. If your truck is equipped with a towing package you'd have a C6 (P R N D 2 1). If you didn't have the towing package it was an AOD (P R N OD D 1).
It has a hitch on it but I don't know if it is factory. I have the c6 (P R N D 2 1). Is there an automatic trans that would be a bolt in swap. Not really wanting to have to modify a lot.
The AOD will swap in, but you'll need the TV (throttle valve) cable and bracket. Then you'll need to adjust it for proper pressure in the trans.
Do they sell those aftermarket, or will I have to use one off a donor truck? How do you know what the proper pressure is?
Anybody know what year/code the AOD i'll need is? I assume I can use a truck or bronco trans right? Will my transfer case bolt to the AOD, or will I have to replace it too?
