1973 f100, 302, Edelbrock 1406, C4. Idle is set @ 650. Truck starts right up and idles great. As soon as you pull it into gear she dies, no chug, chug, she dies like you cut the switch off. Drop it into neutral no issues.
I tried increasing the idle speed to 850, same problem.
You can keep your foot on the pedal and keep the reves up and she will run in gear. Seems to be ok on the open road.
whatcha thank??
Ya, ran a compression test and fond the 2 on on head. Pull the heads and fixed them, runs great now. Not that yours may be that, just something to check if you do not figure it out.
Disconnect vacuum advance and plug at carb and see what happens.
Ran crappy with the same results.
I’ve advanced the timing, retarded the timing. Increased the idle speed, checked all vacuum hoses etc., good fuel pressure/flow to carb etc. Starts great, idles great, drop into gear and it kills her dead
i think you have a vacuum leak somewhere else .... there is no reason to have that low of vacuum at idle .. unless you have a big cam in it.
go over every vacuum hose with a fine tooth comb ... your idle mixture screws and see where those are set. if you have them turned out more than about 3 full turns, i'd suspect a vacuum leak somewhere in the system.
if all of that check out, then it may be in your metering rods....
out of gear, you have more engine vacuum than you do in gear. When engine vacuum drops, the metering rods lift to fatten up the fuel mixture.
if you have the tuning kit for the 1406 try changing your metering rod springs. the tallest spring will lift the rods around 8" of vacuum ... try that one first, if you have them.
if you dont have them, try removing the metering rods alltogether. You will be running very rich this way, but it would likely tell you if it is related to the point at which the metering rods begin to lift to fatten up the mixture.
Here's an interesting twist to this problem. I needed to move the truck over in the driveway yesterday so we dropped it into neutral and rolled it back. After that I just started the truck without pumping the pedal ( normal after sitting). The truck started right up, ideling low at around 550 maybe 600 ( she's cold), put it into gear and it did not die! hmmm, tried reverse, drive etc. Ok.
Drove it up and down the drive way no issues.
I have no idea what all that means and I can't get back to it until Monday
