6.0 diesel coolant filter / scangauge

Hello all,
I have been doing some reading through the technical folders and 6.0 bible and noticed the coolant filter idea. I just bought an 04 f350 diesel and think this is a good idea. I found a kit for like 148 bucks, here is the link Sinister Coolant Filtration System / Filter Kit for Ford Powerstroke

Just wondering what peoples input was on this, I know someone said they pieced one together for like 50 bucks give or take, but I was thinking if the kit comes with everything I would need it might be a better way to go? Just looking for advice is all, and if all of this info. is somewhere else sorry for re-posting I just couldn't find much beyond what I've said here..

Also I read through many of these posts and a lot of the members seem to be a huge fan of the scangaugeII. I looked at that online as well, was thinking about picking one of these up as well, I read on some post here that you want to watch 2 numbers and make sure they don't exceed some figure, but I can't recollect what those numbers were, was wondering if someone could explain to me what exactly this unit is used for. Also I hear a lot about programmers, I am very new to the diesel world so I'm intrigued on what the benefits of the programmer is, I'm not so much looking for like 900 horsepower or anything like that, I just want to maybe increase mpg a little and keep everything running smoothe as glass.

Any input is very much appreciated! Thanks so much!!

I paid $115 for my Sinister Filter

Look on eBay for one with free shipping

It's a very nice setup with no extra parts needed. Decent instructions to

+1,000 on a Scanguage II

Hi Steve,

I'm going to move this to the 6.0L PSD forum. The folks down there should have a better time answering your question.

The ScanGauge is used to watch the engine coolant temp (ECT) and the engine oil temp(EOT). If the oil is 15deg or more hotter than the oil it is likely your oil cooler is clogging up and needs repair soon. If this condition is ignored a cascade of failures can happen that stretch head bolts, blow head gaskets, or even ruin your engine.
A tuner makes more power. If you get one for mileage gains you will be disappointed unless a 1-2 mpg was your goal. Some are hard on the transmission as well. Steer awar from "shift on the fly" tuners, many people swear by custom tunes and many say performance is awesome. I'm sure you'll get lots more info on that subject.
I have a Sinister coolant filter on my truck. Seems to work good. Installation was a breeze and it looks good.
Congrats on the new truck and welcome to FTE!

Yes a ScanGaugeII is a GREAT little device pick one up and will start checking your truck out when you can check the Numbers and give feedback

The Coolant filter kit is a Great Idea them kits Look good

My only problem Was I wanted a Coolant filter that Filtered the system Fast. In short my problem with the Kits is they reduce down to a Very Small line 5/32. the faster you filter will clean out the system. these kits reduce small very small

So I did my own coolant filter kept all the Lines 1 inch took the supply line off the same spot but took the return to a diffrent spot (return went to where the heater return tyes back in to coolant system) All my lines are Big ones and I drill the plastic peice out in the top of the Filter itself.

I choose this route because my coolant system was full of casting sand my oil cooler was plugged with it

My setup was also a little over 100.00 so not to much savings just better flow

But any coolant filter is better than nothing

Thanks for all the replies guys. Ok so it is definite then, a scangauge and this coolant filter setup is a go. Once I finally get my scan gauge running, what numbers should I post up here if I see, other than the eot and the ect. And just to verify what I don't want is an eot that is 15 deg. or more hotter than the coolant temp?

5-10 is considered good

Over that and it's time to consider an oil cooler

Newer trucks are programmed to throw a CEL over 15f. That's when you start risking popping the EGR cooler

Hi,
Question about the setup for the Scanguage 2.
I just got F-350 in mid March. I added the coolant
filter kit from Sinister and a Scanguage 2.
Do I need to do any xguage stuff? I am not towing yet.
Or can I just set to show EOT ECT Battery Voltage and ????

Thanks in advance
Sean

There are a lot of useful Xgauges. When I got mine EOT had to be entered as an Xgauge. Several different ones for FICM volts. I like to monitor trans temp and fan when towing. ICP/IPR are good ones. You don't have to enter them all but at some point any of the Xgauges could come in handy. I would at least print a copy of the list and put it in the truck. If you don't have a copy here it is.

Sg2 codes w/values

Here is a partial list of Xgauges with Ford's values.
