Hey guys, like alot of poststs my truck has started to idle rouph and drive like crap. and it was only happening occasionally. I read some post and checked the connections on the outside of the valve covers. almost looks like something got in there and chewed the wires. all the wires were in tact, just the coating was jacked. so i got in there and retaped all the wires with electrical tape. Alot of them were touching eachothers bare wires. hoping that fixed the problem I start the truck. it was still runninf bad. so with running i wiggle the wires and truck dies. i look down in there and the IPR connection is loos so i go to unplug and replug and the connecter broke off. so i am picking up a new ipr this evening from ford. I dont think i put any kind of pressure to break it off but guess i did. Has anyone else done this. and if it was already broke a little and not getting a good connection there, could this cause my issues. because although it was broke the pins inside the connection could hold it in place.

The connectors going to the valve covers are called the UVCH and the IPR has two wires in one connector to the back side of your High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). Exposed and shorting wires? It will be a miracle if your Injector Drive Module (IDM inside driver-side fender) didn't go out, or at least a fuse somewhere. [LINK] [LINK] [LINK]
It sounds like you need to replace the UVCH connectors too. They are available in a pigtail and are pretty easy to splice in. Bare wires anywhere are bad, but really bad there. The center pin on that connection carries 110v, the other wires are injector grounds and glow plug power. Not good to have any of them touching the other.
Either you had a critter in there or have had a chemical that has degraded the plastic and wire coating.
I had the insulation coatings on the individual wires crumble of near the UVCH connector and was causing some rough idling. I simply used some 'electrical tape' and put a good coating on the bare wiring and that seemed to help.
Another option would be to splice in a new nine pin connector that you can purchase from numerous vendors. That is probably the best repair.
thanks guys, Yeah I do need the ipr pigtail for sure and may as well get both. I did get my new ipr installed last night and got the truck started. It ran like crap, i wiggled the ipr wires and the engine shut off. I started it again and took it around the block several times (whole time running horrible) about the time i decide to wait til tomorrow and work on it (about 12:30am)) i back it in the driveway and it idles normal and check engine light goes off. i pull it out of drivway and drive around for about 10 min and it drove great, no issues. i got home turned it off and on and it ran great. This morning i started it and it ran like crap again this morning. Would the IPR pigtail wires needing to be replaced cuase this? Or could it be the Injector Drive Module as Tugly mentioned ewarlier? Thanks for the help guys
^^^What he said.I had a bad ICP connector and Oreillys ordered it for me.I also had bad IPR connector and International has them.I guess I did not save the website but did a Google search for ICP and IPR connectors and they can be bought on-line if you do not have any luck with Oreillys.I bet they will get them for ya faster.
Johnny,
You do not mention doing anything to those rough looking wires at the valve covers that you mentioned in the initial post. Did you address the breaking insulation on that wiring pigtail? If not, you need to look at that before throwing parts at the truck.
UPDATE: hey guys I appreciate all the help from you guys, I would be more lost then i already am.
*I replaced the IPR (because i snapped the connecter off some how tracing wires. must have been pretty brittle anyway)
* replaced IPR pig tail (had frayed wires and looked pretty bad)
*Liquid taped the valve cover harness (wires looked fine, just need to be recovered)
*Started 50 cent mod, did driver side, wasn't loose at all, threw a quarter in the harness and closed it up.
*Started passenger side. (pulled valve cover, harness really did not look loose, went to put the quarter in and broke the damn clip completely. all parts store were closed except autozone who did not have it. (will be picking up a injector harness tomorrow I guess.) Made sure it was tight, and closed it all up for the night, and plugged all the stuff back up, so I could start and see if it helped. Truck started right up and ran normal. so hopefully when i get the new harness all will be well.
****long story short, what probably should have been a 50 cent mod is going to end up costing about $250, which is probably less then what i would have payed to get diagnosed and fixed anywhere else, and would not have a new ipr (will be hanging on to old one since it is prob fine)**********
Yes Sir...Pull yours off and it will look the same. Here ya go,this is the one I had Oreilly's order for me.Not sure why it says it won't fit.I does work like a champ Dorman Products - 904-222
