well guys i did my first oil sample got my results back today and they wasnt all that great high iron, copper and lead i am not able to post a picture of my oil sample because i can only use my phone, but i will forward the email blackstone lab sent me to you if someone could post it up for me id really apprechate it kindly
story is i bought the truck in may oil (unknown oil) was clean wated till oil turnd black (checked daily) changed out to totella t went 5k miles and took this sample and this is what i got. iron 51 PPM, copper 10 PPM, lead 12 PPM
Your oil analysis is not as bad as you suspect. Yes Iron is elevated but not in the abnormal range yet. Below is a copy of the backside of a Schaffer's Used Oil Analysis repoort.
Iron is not considered abnormal until 100 ppm. Navistar considers Iron normal under 200 ppm in some applications. Now having said that - you want to see it at about 25 ppm or under for 5K miles. But this number could easily be elevated especially if you had done some engine work recently, that goes for copper as well.
Copper, under 40 ppm is normal - if it was over 20 I would be concerned and watch things more closely.
Lead - under 50 ppm is normal - 10 is nothing to worry about.
Send in another sample between 3500-5000 miles. Anything sooner won't shed anymore light on the numbers. If you see an increase in wear metals then watch things closer.
IMO - Blackstone does a good job in making you just worried enough to buy more sample kits. In fact - their universal averages are only averages from their in-house samples. Vehicles in different service applications should not be compared to each other.
thanks for the info, blackstone called me and i had them go ahead and send me 2 bottels and as soon as the kit comes im sampling it again and then again at 4k miles buuuuut when i changed the oil thats in my truck now is a mystik 15-40 partle synthetic same cost as rotella but that was an idiot move with me to keep switching oil once my fist lab comes back and its just as bad or working its way there il flush the systel with new oil before i hit the 5k mile mark
Rich...howd you go about getting a Schaeffer report. Have my B/S sample filled but yet to send it in...sorry slim for the sideline...
I used to work for them and learned alot from the folks in the Oil Analysis Lab, some great people there. Also was in charge of the oil analysis program for my unit in the Army. You can by UOA kits from Schaeffer's for about $13-14 each but you need to buy a case of 6 kits in order to get that price. Just look on their website or call them to get in touch with a sales rep in your area.
I also like Polaris Labs and Amsoil's OAI testing since they (along with Schaeffer's) report oil oxidation and nitration. These are a direct reflection of an oil's serviceability and good to know if you plan to run extended oil change intervals - i.e. 7,500-10,000+ miles.
Jeffery, On a couple of good notes:
1. You air filter is doing an excellent job of keeping the air intake clean.
2. Have you been idling much? Not much fuel in the oil at all.
Thanks Rich....i have an Amsoil dealer around the corner from me. Will contact him tomorrow, and go from there.....now back to regular scheduled program.

no problem timmy not a problem at all :-)
Ok - I get it. Changing oils can also cause temporary elevations in wear metals, so keep that in mind. I wouldn't bother sending in a sample before 3K - it really won't show anything prior to then but flushing out the mystic after 3K would be a good idea. I would recommend sending in a sample of your transmission fluid since you have some bottles from Blackstone on the way. That IMO is a damn good idea especially if you have 180K on the original tranny.

You can go ahead and send that one in to Blackstone if you like - just don't get too concerned about the universal averages. Especially considering the numbers on a UOA report are not absolute and can be + or - 4 points in either direction when the same UOA sample is run through the spectrometer twice.
i guess that AIS filter is doing one hell of a job then :-)
idling um it varries on the situation in the morning when its cold right when i wake up i fire her up then go change into my cloths for college 35 miles away let it at least have a chance to warm up trans and motor before i jump on the interstate 1/4 mile away
the originol oil that was in the truck when i bought it no sir i do not know wat kind it was
i am a amsoil dealer myself was going to switch and stick with it after this oil reashed 5k miles but im gonna get this figured out first then maby switch
IMO? ya i hope its not the stock trans and thought about it doing a sample on it as well then i came across this problem
