1965 F100 Interior Instrument Questions

Ok, I'm on the home stretch on my restoration of my 1965 F100 Styleside. I'm re-wiring the instruments and hooking everything up (one big lesson I learned is to pay close attention when dissassembling, because if not, it's a bitch going back together) and have some questions.

On the 1965 F100 the wiring seems to make the left and right turn signals on the column only blink the right arrow on the instrument cluster.

The left arrow on the instrument cluster comes on red when I push the high beams.

That sounds wrong to me, but that's how the wiring is set up? Can anyone confirm or deny that set up?

Also, I have a slot that has not control or wire for it on the dash (see picture below). What goes there for a 1965 F100? Anyone know?

Thanks.

On our 66 250, that is where the choke was located. We put in a new carb with an electric choke and now have the same problem...what to put in the hole.

The choke cable is located next to the heater blower switch (if present, heaters were optional).

The hole the OP is referring to was capped off with a chrome plug (374052-S13 ~ 1 5/16" O/A diameter for 7/16" hole), unless the accessory 4 way emergency flasher switch (C5TZ-15B590-C ~ 1965 only) was installed.

There is only one instrument cluster lens for the R/L turn signals (furnished only with the dial), cuz it's a Custom Cab w/the sweep speedometer, and that's the way things worked back then.

And (a FAQ), when you turn the head lamps on, the parking lamps turn off, cuz that's also the way things worked back then.

Emergency Fashers were an option?

Bill,

So the emergency flashers were an optional accessory for f100 in 1965?

And to be clear, the way I described it with the right and left blinkers both indicating on the right arrow on the instrument cluster and the high beam on the left arrow, is the way it is supposed to be?

Thanks.

Yup!! The right one is for turn signal and shows green for both L&R. Now the left one shows red and that's for the high beams.

4 way emergency flashers were optional thru 1966. First year they were standard equipment was 1967. The toggle switch is located on a bracket on the inside of the glove box.

That's a loooong reach from the drivers seat, Ford musta assumed everyone had ape arms.

There's only one lens in the sweep speedo cluster for the turn signals.

btw: There are 3 C5TZ-15B590-C switches available NOS, but I didn't look to see if anyone had the ****, bezel (also retains switch to dash), bracket the flasher nestles into and the wiring harness.

GREAT INFORMATION!

Great information all. I can't tell you now much time I spent reviewing and retracing all my wiring to figure out why my left turn arrow would not come on. hahahahaha

Should have checked here first.

Incredibly, the Standard Cab round instrument cluster DOES have both left and right green turn signal lights. It's the upmarket Custom Cab that only has a single light for turn signals ('60 - '65 Falcons and '65 Mustangs also only had one turn signal light). As you may have noticed, the wiring for two turn signal lights is present behind your dash. Should you feel like drilling two small holes in your Custom Cab cluster, you can easily install two green (or whatever color you like) LEDs and have two turn signal lights. When I did that I bypassed the original single green light in the cluster.

On my truck what exists on that hole is the horn. It's a 1965 custom cab. Seems like it was put there by the previous owner since the steering wheel was replaced and no horn is there. I have only had it for 3 weeks so I'm still learning what is original and what was modified. I'll post a picture later today of what it looks like in my truck.

1965 F100/250 2WD Custom Cab would have come a 17" 3 spoke steering wheel, and horn ring.

The horn brush and insulator fit into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel, visible when the horn ring is removed.

The brush has a thin copper wire that snaps. People don't know where to get the parts, so install an aftermarket horn button, which is usually mounted on the steering column.

i'm glad you posted this, because i distinctly remember my 63 having a left turn indicator, and i think my current 64 also does, although it's torn apart right now and i can't check that out.
