so last week my fuel pump on my 49 f36cyl went bad. I ordered a new pump and just a few moments ago took the old one out. someone welded the old one?? I'll attach a link below for pictures. I figured someone must have had to compensate for a worn cam, so i stuck my finger in there and the cam seems fine, however i have not spun the engine over yet and checked the cam in various places.
This is very strange to me. Should I do the same with the new pump???
There should be no reason to weld your new pump. That weld looks like something Farmer McGuyver did to get back home after rabbit hunting with a BB gun...
edit: Does the arm on the new pump look the same? minus the welds?
Could someone have cottiedbobed a different year pump on there - I cant see any reason for a proper pump to need so much compensation - Check the angle of the arms
My guess is that is not the right fuel pump for the engine and the piece was added to make it work. Have you checked the block numbers to be sure a different year engine wasn't installed? I wouldn't modify or install the new pump until you solve this mystery. Seems I recall another topic a while back about a similar problem?
There is quite a bit of wear on that cootie bobbed arm. I'd pull the engine front and inspect the cam. If it's been worn thin the arm could break thru and damage the engine.
I was able to turn the engine over and stuff my finger in the pump hole to feel the cam. the cam feels ok, seems to have even wear across that area. I was expecting a deep groove of some sort. I dont see the need for the added piece.
Perhaps I'll put the new pump in and see what happens??
this pump works with 48-51 6cylinder engines, and its identical to what I took out. Ill scoundrel the old pump for a number maybe. Perhaps this is a v8 pump. they look similar.

It's pretty obvious the old pump was not the right one, so if the new one is identical to it without the extra piece, it too is wrong. Matching the part number of the (wrong) pump won't help either. IIRC from the other topic, there are two nearly identical pumps except for the arm angle. You might try doing an advanced search on this forum for "fuel pump" to see if you can find it.
