You guys r funny. U really think ford would care? I wonder why my sig isnt showing up?
The biggest bragging point I use is that I've replaced 4 injectors. I was talking to another driver early this week, sad story, he called, truck running bad, he just spent almost $4k for a new ficm, 4 injectors, and some other stuff. The shop said while they r n there, might as well replace the whole bank, he had at least 1 inj out. I do not agree with the "might as well spend over $1k on injectors, while we r in there". Phrase that some shops use. What I'm getting to is not about the first repair, but after he called me (i told him I will teach him how to change an injector), I said he shouldn't let them talk him into replacing injectors that arent bad. Ended up spending $1800 to get back on the
road, when the shop said it was a copper washer. He spent 1800 to get back on the road, when if he would take advice, he couldve been driving for less than $15. Its guys like that who give the 6.0 a bad rap. theres no guarantee that those new injectors are all good. I forgot where I was going with this,,,,, oh well, just venting, I'm gonna give him some crap next time he calls, I'm gonna tell him to call his shop, he ain't gonna listen to anything I say neways. I'm not mad at him, just wish everybody liked to keep their money, as much as I do...
I dont even remember all the places she has taken us.. I sure hope she makes 600k. Shes chirping sometimes, I had a post on here a while back and the consensus was leading to a lifter needle bearing. I'm at 531k now and I'm just carrying on like I always have....can't wait for the 600,700 ect pics... They will come for sure, but not sure if they will be with the original engine and clutch...time will tell...thx again guys
Well guys,,,,, she's done. I think cylinder #3 gave way. Started losing power and smoking and knocking. There's oil seeping between the odd side exhaust manifold and up pipe junction. Quite a bit of residue at the #3 exhaust port at the manifold. I unplugged the #3 injector and the smoke all but quit for a bit then started again but not as bad as when the injector is plugged in. 582***miles is how far she got. I'm about 450 mi from home on I 55 in Illinois. No contribution balance codes but cylinder 3 was showing lower on the power balance. Ipr about 26%. Vgt about 66%. I either burnt a hole in the piston, or that lifter needle bearing finally gave way. Changed fuel filters off the bat (even tho they only had 8k on em). No visible metal in oil filter housing or on filter so maybe my front cover can b reused. She's goin under the knife big time. Might as well put a clutch in Er as well while I'm in there ( since its the original one that's still in there). I run 58 mph everywhere loaded or empty and run the edge on stage 2 loaded and stage 5 mty. I'm guessing either a burnt piston, or a busted lifter. What do y'all think. Lets start a wager. Lol. I'm gonna take it apart before returning the core cause I would like to know.
easy check would be to start at the IPR screen and the valley screen for contaminants then pull the injectors then the heads for a real diagnostic view point.
I would also be interested to know about the lifter needle bearings to see if they are all in tact. I'd look for any cam wear. You know, the usual wear points.
At 585k I hope you feel you got your money's worth. That's close to what a 7.3 would offer.

I really hate to hear this. I'm going to take your wager and say burnt piston or broken rings. I'd like to known what finally ended what has got to be one of the highest mileage 6.0L. Since I don't drive mine as much as I was (no longer working away from home)...it's going to take me a long, long time to catch up to your 500k.

And it's only a 6.0L...just proves it possible to get half a million out of "the worse engine ever used by Ford". Not my words, just heard it too many times...by those that don't understand the engine. Yeah, I'd like to rub their noses in it with his high mileage.
I am at a crossroad. I have a bunch of friends that do the same thing as me and are in no way as observant of maintenance as I am and they are averaging over 700k on their cummins engines. I am scared to death of putting an engine in my bread and butter that I know nothing about. I'm referring to doing a cummins swap. I feel I know the 6.0 and am not afraid of it. I've gotta look at the bottom dollar. I can get the Blackstone for 4400 n b done for a while. Or I could get a running cummins whole truck and do the 24 valve swap for about $5k more. Or get a blown cummins and send it as my core to Blackstone for a fresh rebuilt 5.9,,,, however if I go that route then I'm gonna have to use the injectors, turbo, ect off the blown engine. I dunno. I'm prob just gonna replace the 6.0 but I want to do all the research first. Oh. Btw. I'm sure it's not a hpo issue. She's hurt worse than that. Ha. Ha. It's not funny tho. I type this as I'm laying in a new camper with my wife on a frontage road waiting for a (no kidding) 2004 24 valve with over a million miles to come get me n the camper so I can go back to Indiana and get into a 2004 6.0 with 875k (3rd engine tho). And bring a flatbed to bring ole grey home.
Maybe a blown piston ring huh???? I'm still all ears
No. It'd b about 12. I might not do it. But I'd b an idiot to put a 3rd 6.0 in it if I only get 500 k outta the new one. It might sound like a lot. But just to give an idea. Me n my wife ran 1100 mi last week without even stopping the wheels. My truck prob only has about 150 k mi worth of normal ownership. Cold starts I mean. I prob do 5-7 cold starts a month. I have first hand experience on the longevity of other makes.
The only way I would put a cummins in here is if its a fresh rebuilt one. Why an idiot btw. The 04 I'm going to get had a new crate engine from ford installed for 11+k. Oh we'll. I'm not trying to b a basher of anything. Everything breaks. But can't help but notice there arent any v engines in otr tractors. Which is what I'm using this as. But if mentioning getting a tractor is on anyone's tongue,,, yeah right. Not for this operation. It's not the money btw. That's not the issue. It's that my wife is here with me stuck and we have a schedule to keep. Like our own bed was sounding pretty good today. Good enough that I would prob give 15 right now to b at home with the truck fine. Oh well

Was that the 2nd or third engine that you stuffed in that '04 for $11k? As far as V-arrangement engines in Class 7/8 tractors...Cat used to offer the 3408 (V8 1100CID-approximate) up until about '85 or '87 before the "four & a quarter" 3406B (inline 6-banger 928CID) pretty much took over their highway truck production. In the Kodiak/TopKick and F650 sized trucks...they ran the 3208 until the early '90s before it was replaced by a pair of six bangers...3116 & 3126. Didn't Detroit Diesel run a 2-cycle until the early '90s? The common factor for why Class 7/8 trucks got was from V8 engines was better fuel economy...not necessarily reliability issues. Technology had progressed to the point that they (engine designers/builders) had figured out how to get the same power (HP) out of a I6 compared to a V8...while getting better fuel economy and torque.
I have a 2nd gen cummins 5.9 and so I'm a member on the TDR.
500,000+ miles is not uncommon on those engines with plenty of examples of 700,000+.
I don't believe I'll get that far with my 6.0. Hopefully I will though.
You are right about the 5.9 being less effected by a more casual maintenance schedule. I swear mine could run on peanut butter.
