I looked into buying new from the south before I bought this 2011 F150. The two dealers I looked into, Dave Motors in Idaho and Ford in Bismark ND, both said that if they sold a NEW truck to a Canadian customer, their dealer brand licences could and would be pulled. They could sell me something with 1k miles on it and call it used, but not NEW. Truth be known, the difference was only 9g on the Dodge, 12g on the Ford. Is that really worth it with the uncertainty of new diesels? I don't know if 9-12g would cover an engine replacement...

Ryan, there int 30-40 grand depreciation as soon as ya drive off the lot, that kind of depreciation is after a few years. "They" say ya do depreciate about 10 grand the minute ya drive it off the lot.

I definately would check into the whole dealer servicing/warranty issues before I bought one. I talked in depth to a fellow that bought a brand new lariat 350 diesel ford from the states for 38 grand, and he told me to my face he had a couple of warranty issues fixed up here. I guess he coulda been BS'n me, but it sure didnt seem like it. He might have mentioned something about getting it sold to a states address, then he technically bought it as "new" sorta like what you were talking about Sherm.

There have been several people in my area that have bought new vehicles in the states. but like preppy said they had someone in the states buy it and then they bought it form them just so they could get the warrenty and still have a new vehicle.

Depreciation is 15% retail the minute you sign the papers and take ownership. Drive it off the lot and accumulate some miles and it drops to 20% retail in about a week. It takes about 3-4 years before you have "equity" in a vehicle, where if financed, you have paid more down than the vehicle has depreciated. I'm learning that this 2011 F150 may very well be my last "new" vehicle. The raping you take on the new vehicle purchase is brutal. I entertained thoughts of buying a leftover 2011 F250/6.2L that they were clearing out. I'd have been upside down 12g in my truck alone once the smoke cleared. Not a pretty picture, but also nothing I didn't know going into the deal. Only benifet for me is I can claim the truck as a business expense, so the depreciation pays for itself

The sales guy at Dave Smith Motors called me about a week later with a 2011 Dodge 3500 that had 800 miles on it. Some guy had bought it with the auto transmission but didn't like towing with it and wanted a manual. Smoking deal on the truck, but I had moved past the Dodge HD, realizing that I couldn't justify nor afford that truck at the time.

For me, buying a "local" vehicle, though paying extra up front, will usually pay for itself in good service from the place I buy. I can and will praise Royal Ford for their excellent service.

I didn't mean 30-40k. As soon as off the lot I was looking at my friend 08 worth 21,000, I was looking at the 5 year picture

Depreciation happens to any used vehicle as well. Your 26000 dollar 05, will probably be worth half of what your paid, IF your lucky in 3-4 years.

Sucks, but thats how it works.

I find that scale more comforting then the previous owner paid. Oh well that's the way it is, point is its disturbing how quality control countinues to fall as we pay more

Yeah you have a good point about the quality compared to the price.

Either way depreciation sucks. Very few veicles hold their value really well. I always think it matters on how long ya keep a new vehicle. If ya keep it for years and years, the depreciation isnt bad, and it will actually pay to buy new. If you change your vehicles every couple of years, well your losing cash no matter what.

Your right, the first few years is a killer and then the depreciation tapers off.
