Thumbs down Cab off 6.4

Ouch - my truck developed the bedplate leak that the 6.0 was famous for, and the fame spread forward to its sibling, the 6.4...
Its a cab off, but the 6.4 was designed for the cab off to be an easier process than it was on my 2003 6.0. I was quite sickened when I found out my 6.0 needed the cab off because I thought things would never be the same given how anally fussy I am. When I saw the cab supported above the truck on the lift and the easy engine access, I was actually glad this was how it was done. Everything was right there in front of them and assembly is so nice - not bending over and not being able to see/do things properly.
Also, no scratches or swirl marks on the fender edges when working over them (regardless of how much precaution is taken - remember, I am **** about that stuff!)
I made 70000 kms on the old truck after the cab off, and there wasnt a glitch.
Actually, after the 6.0 problem child I had for the first 160000 kms, the last 70000 were trouble free...

That sucks.

Seems like both of your trucks were fairly problematic. Is there any hope for this 6.4 to be "trouble free" like that last 70k like your 6.uhoh was?

Ya know I never have had a bed plate leak on my truck. Just sending my Ficm off to the states to get it repaired.

This truck isnt much different than anything else out there - its had far fewer problems than my 2003, but in the same ballpark as the other brands newer offerings - the days of simplicity in diesels is long gone. I have lots of friends trucks to compare with - all makes, used for work, and making 40000ish kms/year, so they are not pampered princesses!

The new gas engines are far simpler and more reliable - time will tell on things like Ecoboost - once again, more complexity...
If people are looking for a lower cost of ownership, from depreciation, through maintenance, and the cost of repairs after warranty, I strongly advise against these newer diesels... all brands have front ends that are too light for engine weights and Sask roads!
However, if you WANT one, or NEED one, they are very capable with gobs of 'untapped' potential...

I NEED one, WANT one when tuned, and make enough use of it to make the numbers work that I wont ever be off warranty again!

Whats the turn around time?
On my 2003 that had almost every warranty repair in the book done, my bedplate was dry as a bone. Also, when other guys were having injector issues, mine made the entire 230000kms without a problem - go figure...

I see a lot of new superduties coming with gas plants compared to a decade ago when everyone had a diesel. But ill go on record saying I'm a little sketched out about the Eco-boost alternative. Just saying everytime in history Ford trys putting out big hp from a smaller engine a few years down the road problems start arising. Latest example 4.2 V6 I know of 3 that blew out conecting rods around home

If you are ordering new, enjoy the 5 year/160000 km warranty and drive it!
The 'project vehicle' you created with a transplant would be more hassle than any of these new engines - let Ford keep it running...

If you were going to do a transplant I think your best route would be to go with an older truck. I agree with Warren if you are going to buy new go with the warranty you will be much better off.

Basically a good portion of the reason I always have one new vehicle. I don't care about making payments if I have to. The piece of mind knowing that I won't cost me a cent for 5 years (or more if I buy an extended warranty) if I have problems is worth making payments. Also, I know that if my truck goes down, the dealer will provide me with a worthy replacement. Private garages likely won't, so I get inconvenience along with a repair tab.

With my most recent truck I also purchased the maintenance package, so I don't pay for any maintenance intervals either. The maintenance package covers pretty much everything except tires, an unlimited amount of times replacement, for 120k... Their calculations showed that in 120k, I'd save about 3g by purchasing the maintenance package. However it could add up to more if the truck needed more maintenance than usual.

Ive always went the other way in the past. Buy a couple years older, dont worry about the huge loss of value once ya drive it off the lot, and performed repairs myself.

So far its been easy, but so far ive picked vehicles that have had excellent reliability history's.

Not quite sure how I am going to do the next new truck, new with warranty might be needed as the trucks are getting harder to work on, and alot more poor reliability reps.

The depreation is getting scary, I have a friend that bought a 08 King Ranch 110,000kms for 22,500 and a. Coo-worker bought a '10 Lariat for 37,000. Unless its a write off I couldn't stand losing that much myself

I have priced a few brand new fancy trucks from fords website and they were always around the 60-70 grand mark. It is scarey to think that they lose half of their value in a few years.

Im convinced the way to buy a new truck is to import it from the states. The more I look into it, the more people talk really good about it, and the more I wanna do it!
