Possible purchase

I test drove this X tonight http://www.toplessmotorsinc.com/inventory/view/ my scan gauge showed a 20 deg delta temp between ect and eot driving down the freeway @ 70. it also had a little wander to the left. I was just looking at the pictures in his add and noticed what appears to be a coolant leak from the coolant cap. He seems flexible in the price, but with the coolant leak I'm afraid of a head gasket. My question is, what do you guys think? Decent buy if I can get it for $18? Or keep looking.... Thanks

um...I would say no. She has about $4-5,000 in repairs needed immediately. That's assuming the EGR hasn't popped yet either.

I'd get the price down to about $15,000 and then buy it. Figure on an easy $5k to get new headgaskets, new oil cooler, new EGR cooler, update all the oil lines and other misc parts that have come out.

Oh yeah, and put ARP headstuds in there.

but yeah, nice rig except for these pics

I agree with Tylus. That white near the degas bottle cap is The coolant inhibitor package being boiled and forced from the cooling system. Bulletptoofing isnt cheap but if you can get it for the right price and The miles are low then doing all that work is not a big deal. Then you will get another 300,000 miles out of it!

Are you after a certain engine? 6.0L, 7.3L or the V10 gasser?

6.0 or 7.3, i don't mind the 6.0 if I can get one that needs to bullet proofed for the right price.

Does it look as clean in person as it does in the photos? It does seem a little high priced but the miles are low. See if they have the OASIS report or ask them if they would get it from the ford dealer. The report will show the repair & recall history of the vehicle. You could get it yourself, any Ford service department can pull one up on their system, just need the VIN. I think the 6.0L's were in the 16-18K range in my area (South Dakota) when I was looking for mine last year, but all the ones I came across had twice as many miles on them.

Don't worry about the steering wander - they all have it. Nature of the beast. There is a huge thread on it and the things to do to correct it. I'll post the link.

It's just as clean in person, this is what I found: the driver seat has slight leather wear, the top of the driver and passenger door interior panels are a little sun bleached, it has wind deflectors on all the doors, dime sized scratch on the back door that was "filled in", some paint has come off the front bumper, looks like it was splashed with something that ate the paint, maybe a quarter size but he offered to have it fixed. A wheel cap has disappeared since the photos, he's not sure what happened to it. Under the x was not oily, no dents from offroading. Oh, and it needs to be bullet proofed soon before it has a catastrophic failure. It had rubber winter floor mats and the stock summer mats. Tires had about 70% tread left.

Sounds nice, I had to have the left piece of the drivers seat replaced (the part that everyone slides on to get in & out of the drivers side) and it only cost me $150 at a local car upholstery place. I'de check the OASIS to see if the EGR and turbo have had any work. Just like the others said above - if your willing to spend the $ to make her bulletproof it sound like you've got a nice clean truck to start with.

Ok, so I have him talked to $18,500 not sure if I should pull the trigger on this, I know you guys said not to go more than $15,000, but at $18,500 I'm under blue book, and everyone else i've looked at with similar miles, year and condition is at least $22k+ I'm going to bullet proof what ever I get so, if I end up putting $5k into it, I'll be sitting at $23,500 invested for a very reliable truck.... Just looking for some final pro/cons before I either walk away or buy. Thank you everyone for you input.

What matters is if YOU are comfortable with it. Sure cheaper is better, buy it and make it reliable, cause you are going to love the truck.

Cheers
