hypermax boost/pyro gauge install question

A friend gave me this quite nice combination boost/pyro gauge but did not have the installation instructions. I cannot for the life of me figure out how the gauge mounts inside this cup - maybe I am missing some parts?. Hoping someone here can educate me.....

here is the gauge, a couple of clips and the little bag has some nuts/washers

and here is a pic of the cup it goes into. I expect that those clips get attached to the 2 outside lugs on the back of the gauge, and then what? there is no lip or anything inside the cup to hold it.

My guess is it just slides in... Like every other gauge... It should be tight in there and that should be enough..

Those clips will work on a flat panel with the hole in it, but not with that cup

it definitely is not a snug fit. Maybe an o-ring? I will try that.

nope - there is no way an oring is going to fit between that gauge and the cup.
oh well, there is a hole in the back of the cup. I'll just rig something up to hook up to those outside lugs and then have a stud sticking out the hole, put a nut on it and call it good.

Just wrap some tape around the gauge so it fits tight in the cup.

Mine is just a friction fit in the cup.

I have the same Hypermax boost/EGT combo gauge in my Excursion 7.3L PSD (installed by previous owner). I just emailed their tech support for the instructions, 'cos: 1. my gauge rattles a bit in the cup, 2. I wanted to see if there was a way for the pilot lamp to be brighter & modified to be green to be easier to read at a glance at night, and to be closer match the stock interior gauges, and 3. to check my install vs. recommended locations etc.

They emailed me the instructions, though they aren't that great, not much detail or pictures etc. You could also email their tech support for the install instructions (they responded within a couple of hours), or if you PM me your email, I can email you the instructions I got from them.

In the instructions they make reference to 2 'spring clamps' in the parts list, but then don't mention them anywhere else in the 2 pages of install directions. Perhaps those 2 L shaped clips are what they call spring clamps, but as mentioned above, I believe those are intended as a separate alternative mounting mechanism to the gauge cup.

*** The part that you are most likely interested in is Step 7 that says "Carefully insert gauge into cup. Do not kink boost line. Fasten gauge to cup with 10-32 x ½” screw." ***

They suggested that since my gauge was rattling a bit, that either that screw had fallen out or come loose.

Their response re the lighting was that the pilot lamp is a standard twist type bulb, they don't know if there is a brighter bulb, and the gauge is usually wired to the dimer switch. Also, they don't offer a green cap to change the color of the lighting, so I may try sticking some green foil over the lamp if it's still bright enough, or try retrofitting one or more green LEDs into the space for the standard bulb, if possible.

P.S. They don't really mention the pilot lamp other than to test it & connect to dimmer circuit, and I don't see it on the pic you posted above, unless it's behind one of those red covers. Where does the pilot lamp install in the gauge? Do you think it would be possible to cram one or more green LEDs in the spot for the standard twist type bulb?

The ones I've had were possibly an older version but they used the hole in the back of the pod to screw into a bracket that held the gauge tight in place. Hope that helps.

PM on the way

*** The part that you are most likely interested in is Step 7 that says "Carefully insert gauge into cup. Do not kink boost line. Fasten gauge to cup with 10-32 x ½” screw." ***

so presumably this screw goes through the side of the gauge cup, then tightens against the gauge itself? there is no hole in my gauge cup for a screw

P.S. They don't really mention the pilot lamp other than to test it & connect to dimmer circuit, and I don't see it on the pic you posted above, unless it's behind one of those red covers. Where does the pilot lamp install in the gauge? Do you think it would be possible to cram one or more green LEDs in the spot for the standard twist type bulb?

on mine, that red cover simply pops out. I have seen the type of spring clipped bulb fixture that can go in the hole. I have one from another gauge but it is way too long for this one. hmmmm, now that I think about it, maybe the bulb is supposed to go into the back of the cup, and then it would stick into the gauge (into the red plastic thing)? I'll have to try that. to answer your question, absolutely there is room for some leds behind the red cap. If you are handy at rigging stuff up it should be easy to do. In fact, I will probably try that - make my own LED bulb holder. BTW superbrightLEDs.com has a great selection of auto leds at what I think are pretty good prices, even when shipped to Canada.

The ones I've had were possibly an older version but they used the hole in the back of the pod to screw into a bracket that held the gauge tight in place. Hope that helps.

that is what I figured, but there is no bracket. I just wrapped it with tape as suggested previously and it is holding very well

Are there threads under the red cap in the center ?

no threads, just a round hole.
