Aside from being an shortsighted design because it doesn't hold itself in place when trying to hook up, it's also a target for thieves. I have mine fixed in place with a set screw thru the outer receiver but didn't use a locking pin this weekend.
Be sure to put a locking hitch pin in if you leave your reducer on, a new reducer sleeve from Ford is $61 (yes, that 4" steel tube alone), which is why I'm guessing mine was ripped off. Parts department today "Yeah, we keep lots of those in stock, they get lost or stolen." Just glad it didn't happen at a time when I had to have it.

Nice. I too am not pleased with the design. Would have been nice if it had a collar on the front of it, so that it doesnt "push through" when putting the hitch on the truck.
As for getting stolen, that is a good point. I have always avoided locking hitch pin's because I am afraid I would misplace the key....
doesn't matter anymore but a better price from Tousley
yeah that is about what calranch is getting for them locally, not a big deal to me at all. I use a B&W hitch with 2" and 2 5/16" ball on it, it never comes off the truck. I am not seeing the issue here.
I keep a pin with a key lock on mine, so no fear of it getting stolen.
It is a pain in the butt to install my weight distributing hitch though. That thing weighs a ton and I always seem to push the inserts to far in and keep having to jiggle it to get the pin holes lined up.

More of an issue for those with a weight dist. hitch and don't use a fixed ball, can't leave a big WDH on there.
The aftermarket reducers have more square corners, like someone said, they have to ground down, and then they rust.
I use a locking pin for all 3 of my hitches. I have 2 with 2" ***** on them for my utility trailer and a buddies slightly larger utility trailer. I use the reducer for these. For my TT, I bought a 2.5" shank for my weight dist hitch, no slop what-so-ever and a lot quieter while towing. Using my weight dist hitch with the old shank with the reducer was very noisy and the hitch moved around A LOT.
I bought one from Tractor Supply for $12 before I found out the dealer was supposed to give me one. It is a Reese and fits perfectly, just had to scratch the UPC sticker off. I also bought a 2.5" drawbar and seeing that it was about $80, I keep the locking pin in it all the time.
