I went to start my truck today and everything sounded as if it was turning over normally but it wouldn't start. I was low on gas and parked on a decline, so I put it in N and rolled out onto flat ground, then put in a few gallons of gas. Still wouldn't start.
A friend showed me a trick to clear out computer memory by disconnecting the battery terminals and holding them together for a little while (from a transmission issue I still haven't resolved, but seems to be unrelated as this has been going on for many months without this new issue). I did this and got the truck to start, but it runs very hard, blew a few clouds of white smoke out of the exhaust which turned to a small, steady flow of black smoke, and won't move the truck more than a few MPH's.
All fluids look ok, except for the power steering cap was loose and looks like it went low. Coolant is full, trans fluid is good, brake fluid is good, oil is full and clean. Plugs seem to be connected tightly.
Any ideas where I should look next? I would take it to get codes, as the check engine light is coming on, but the nearest place is 5 miles away in heavy traffic.
Since you reported black smoke coming out of the exhaust it could be a faiure of a cylinder to fire or an over fuel issue.
1. Pull the codes from the computer
2. Check the cap, wires, rotor, and plugs. You might have a cylinder not getting spark
3. Check the fuel pressure regulator it might have a bad (leaking) diaphragm.
4. Do a compression check

I followed the directions and when I turn the key to on I hear a slight humming noise (assumed it was my fuel pump) but it doesn't stop... it just keeps humming... and my check engine light stays on. Maybe it's not the fuel pump I'm hearing? This is the only noise that I hear.
I ran some 14-guage wire from the STI to the negative terminal. Could this be too big? Am I supposed to disconnect the terminals first?
Just wanted to put some closure to this thread... my cpu was filled with water. Had it refurbished and resealed my windshield... there was a chevy symbol stuck under the old windshield seal
Good to know you got it fixed. i wished I had checked this 2 months ago. I would have mentioned the ECM failed in regards to the statement about the noise. thanks for posting a follow-up as so many 1st time members never seem to come back after solving the problem, selling the problem, or stop altogether.
