1986 xlt bronco 302/5.0 fi. Vehicle is sputtering and doing the usual run bad stuff, strong smell of unburnt fuel in the exhaust. white smoke form the exhaust above 3k rpms decided to take it to the ford dealership to have it checked out (asked for it to be placed on the computer) got a call from the service rep. (can't talk to mechanics anymore) and was told no codes were reported. They also told me that the dizzy needed to be pulled and re-installed and that the wires were crossed up just for starters, as the open estimate was over $250 and the problem may still be there. That'll be $80.00 sir went back the next morning after explaining that I'm not a security mom (know my current events) and that I didn't want to spend the money on a guess (sorry, expert opinion), I wanted a computer to analize the problem and I would take it from there. Well what do you know, codes 14, and 18 pop up. Now Im sure these will indicat a problem with a lack of spark and the whole fire triangle thing, might even be what they said at the shop . can any of you experts out there give me some common terms for what these codes really mean? Truck was running fine last week, then it just started to do an O.J. (kill). New plugs, air and fuel filter, wires, (replaced one at a time) by the way she's 4sale no good offer turned down
14 indicates a bad PIP, and 18 indicates a wiring problem with the SPOUT connector. So they're on track with the distributor problems. I don't know if it needs replacing or it can be fixed, but dealerships tend to want to sell parts.
Start with the PIP sensor, unplug the battery, drive it, and see if it gets better and pull the codes again.
Thanks, checked all wiring adjusted the diz, and she ran perfect. That is until Im stopping the vehicle. Then it just kills, and it takes me a few min to get it started again. Also the white smoke burned away after it was ran for a few min.Classic TFI symptons?, correct me if Im wrong. they range from $29.00-$120.00, why such a wide range in prices? Anyway its still $4SALE
