Well, I finally disassembled engine of a completely seized 1949 F5 and found too many problems to restore it so I have a solid truck and need a new engine. Can I drop a 351 in with the existing manual tranmission, or should I try to acquire a rebuilt engine of this vintage? I have a rebuilt 351 that runs great in a 1985 truck that I am going to scrap anyway.
The 351 sounds fine but it won't bolt up to your tranny . You could use a newer truck tranny with the 351 but clutch linkage will be a son of a gun to adapt . How about a C6 ?
A C6 transmission was a heavy-duty automatic transmission built by Ford between 1966 and 1996. It was built for larger motors and is a tough 3 speed (no overdrive). There are bell housings for 3 or 4 different Ford motors including Windsor and Cleveland 351's.
The 351 probably has a c6 on it already so that is great. I know ia have some work to do stepping down the 12v for lights and gauges. Any thoughts on the radiator?
Depends on your money situation and such, but you can get a brand new aluminum radiator for $300...made to fit. Easy as a phone call and debit card/credit card/paypal transaction. The place I am referring to is in MI so its not far from you. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks for your help as always.
Howdy,
Well, if you're going to use your old axles and you have replaced or (are going to replace) your Widow Maker (Split Rim) wheels, Any transmission you use might need to have a parking brake associated with it unless you'd like to fab your own trans or rear axle mounted parking brake.
If I am not mistaken, (and you're using an original axle) your rear brakes don't include a provision for a parking brake.
If it were me, I would find a 300 cu-in 6 and ZF S5-42 out of a 90's F150-F350 4x4 and use it.
Then I would find a parking brake from either a motor home or an F450 Superduty truck. (the parking brake assy will bolt right up where the transfer case connects to a ZF-5 speed trans)
That F-5 would run pretty nice with a 300 in it and just about every "truck" type wrecking yard has them.
If I wasn't using a Y-block, I would be using a 300 + a ZF trans in my 55 F-600!
If you want to use an automatic, you could use what I'm using. An E4OD will bolt right up to a 300 and if you get an EFI 300, the ECM will control the E4OD.
Both the ZF 5 speed and E4OD have over drive (0.76/0.77 & 0.71:1 respectively) . (You'll probably need it if you're using an original axle in that F-5)
I looked at my 48-55 Ford parts manual and it appears that the 49 F-5 could have either had a 2 speed (5.83:1, 8.11:1) or a single speed of around 5.29:1 or 6.xx:1 . With 7.50-20 tires, you're gonna need an over drive type transmission.
Even if you do use a 351/302, 300 or even a 460 etc I would still get a ZF 5 speed. (because of the OD) Otherwise it's gonna "SCREAM" at highway speeds. If you have your heart set on a C-6, I think you can still get the one that is used with a 4x4 transfer-case and use the Super Duty parking brake. ......although I am not absolutely sure that the parking brake assy (that will go on the back of a ZF or E4OD) will work with a C-6.
FIND A fmx trans. One of the best trans. ford ever built. I had one in my old fastback when i was a kid . I had about 7 c4 trans. before i fould the FMX. just my 2 cent !!!!

Might be just great for a car. An F5 is a Medium Duty truck with around a 14,000lb GVW. An FMX might be a tad light......
