I have a 1970 ford fairlane 500. The engine is a 351 4v and c6 auto. Was this engine an option for this car or did someone install it? What do you think the engine is worth. Im not wanting to sell it my dad gave it to me and i want to find an old f1 to put it in. Thanks Robert Turnbull
I just stripped down a 1974 Fairlane 500 and that had a 351c 2v and a C4 Auto. Not to sure about the C6 in your Fairlane. Mine was also an Austrialian verion of the Fairlane. I installed the engine and tranny into my '65 F100, pretty straight forward except for some minor issues.
Though it was possible to order almost "anything in anything" back in those days, a 351C 4V and a C-6 were definitely not standard fare in a Fairlane. The most common combo was 302 2v and a C-4. Even the 351 equipped cars would have had a C-4 stock.
Most likely, it's a transplant, and a danged heavy one for such a car.
That's not necessarily true; my 351C 4V came from a 74 Cougar, and was equipped with the C6. I know of a couple of Cleveland 2Vs in early 70s Cougars in one salvage yard with the small housing C6 still behind them, so I don't see why the Fairlane/Torino wouldn't have had some C6s as well. Seems like the FMX is common behind the Clevelands, too.
I got my cleveland out of a 72 Torino. It was a 4V (open chamber) 4 bolt main with a C6 behind it.
I don't know if that was the stock trans. When I decided to have it built, they told me the tranny was fried and it belonged to a 6 cyl., due to the number of clutches. I think it was 3 clutches.
But the tranny wasn't fried, it was running fine, I just decided to have it re-built at the time. Tuff as nails.
I have since swapped out the heads to 4V quench, w/stud mounted rockers and mech. cam.
When I was growing up, my parents also had a 72 Torino station wagon with a 2V Cleve and a C6. The 74 Cougar a full size car? I wouldn't think; it's the same body as the 71, which should be similar to the big Mustangs up to 73. I know the Torino went full-frame in 72, but I thought the Cougar was still a uni-body from 71-74. I don't think it was near as big as the giant LTD.
