2001 Excursion 7.3L Tranny Problem

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. Having some tranny problems with my 2001 Excursion with the 7.3L Diesel. Transmission is slipping occasionally in first (takes it a few seconds to engage.) Sometimes in reverse it's making noise and when slowing down in first - just before it comes to a stop it sounds like it's grinding. I had the fluid changed and flushed in it approx 1000 miles ago at my mechanics shop. Any thoughts. Truck has approx 135,000 miles on it. I've owned it for a year with no problems whatsoever. This just started approx 10 days ago. Also - in first gear there is a high pitched whining - not super loud but wasn't there before. Trying to figure if it's getting ready to give up the ghost or what... Any help would be appreciated.

Funny thing. My tranny went on my Non ford Matrix. It started that high pitch whining. Now no reverse or 2nd. and pops out of 1st occassionally. Never went back on the road since. So I do not know if 3, 4, 5th will work. I do not want to try that to find out.
I would try and get it serviced before it lets go on you on some distance place away from home.
I was fortunate mine gave out just as I pulled into my driveway.

As much as I hate to give you bad news, your in for a rebuild or replace in near future. I just went threw it with same 01 7.3 excursion. I did check bypass valve first and found it plugged but that only gave me about another 30 days. I also replaced the transmission cooler with the 6.0 cooler runs nice and cool when towing. I looked at all options, used, rebuilt, r&r myself to save money. In the end I did a rebuild to mine'as I bought truck new so I knew tranny had been serviced regularly and made sure I did mods I always wanted to do, valve body'mod, billit torq converter, ect. It's been the best investment to date.

Did you replace the mechanical diode intermediate one way clutch? Or were you one of the lucky ones that didn't have it?
