Transmission Woes
Dave in MT.
Some people will get a lot more miles some will get a lot less. The more is usually luck and manufacturing variation. Less is usually poor maintenance or bad habits.
$3400 seems a bit high for a rebuild. I think aveage is around $2000 to $2500. BUT, a lot depends on what hard metal parts died. Most of my rebuilds required sun shells and clutches etc. If you eat a gear set or any other big hard parts, the price goes up a lot. MT is a bit in the boonies, maybe shops charge more out there?
The diesels are a bit harder on trannies from what I have been told.
I had one tranny where I changed the fluid every 50K versus factory recommended 100K. Fluid was great at 50K change. At about 90K the sun shell went out and I needed a rebuild at about $2700 for a chebby. The sun shell is notorious on that model tranny.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
I use old a/c condensors from an auto recycler.
Clean it out and bolt it in.
Use the coolers in series, radiator first then auxilliary cooler.
