Thumping sound in front end
2000 Explorer XLT - I have this thumping sound coming from my front end. When I drive I can feel it under my feet. It happens especially when I go over a bump. The mechanic said he can feel the thumping when he drives it. He has checked everything and said everything is tight. Therefore he feels no repair or further investigation is needed. Does anyone have any suggestions (besides dumping the mechanic, because he is already history).

My wifes '98 was doing the same thing, turns out it was her step bar on the driver side that was loose in the front. I don't know if you have step bars on yours but if you do check the bolts and make sure they have not come loose.

Another clunking can be caused by the torsion bar teflon pads. If you look where the torsion adjuster nut is, there is a pad that the torsion bars rest against. These can wear thru, leaving slack in the torsion bars. Get them replaced.

I've had this noise since my truck was new. It also happens off and on, mostly when going over speed bumps, or dips that cause the front end to bounce. I've had this looked at several times by Ford and other shops and everthing is "fine". It went away for about six months after I had the front suspension recall done. I can't remember exactly what this was, but they basically replaced some bolts that could shear. Whatever they did improved the problem for a while, but it eventually came back.
