Hi all,
I new here having just bought my first truck last weekend. It's a one-owner, garage kept, 1987 F-150 XLT Lariat with a 4.9L I-6 and 84,000 miles on the odo. I've read and searched a bit but have not been able to ID the transmission. It's a 4 speed (no overdrive) and 1st is a granny gear. The door label says trans code "A". Anyone got any ideas?
Thanks,
Jonathan
ps. I've learned a lot from you guys over the last day or so...particularly about the dual gas tank, fuel gauge, sender/pump problem which my truck also has.
Originally posted by brown 4x4 Trans code "A" is the NP435 4 speed, but I wasn't aware it was available after 86.
Thanks, I've been having a hard time finding a VIN decoder that works on trucks made after 1980 through 1996. I sorta concluded it had to be the New Process 435 but wasn't sure since several of the tranny links said it wasn't used in Ford Trucks after '85. Guess they had a few left over and used them. As far as I can tell the 4.9 I-6/NP435 combo is rock solid/long lived drive train if you don't mind going slow and feeling like your driving a tug boat...
