Fuel filter preference?

I am currently running a Donaldson fuel filter in my truck (5 microns at 95%, strips water at a 93-96% clip). Baldwins, Fleetguard and Motorcraft (Racor/OEM) are all good filters as well, filter in the 9-10 micron @ 98.6% and strips water in the 92-97% efficiency ballpark.

I had a problem in Jan 2012 driving down from NY to FL towing my camper. I was using Wix engine filter(integrated top) and Wix filter in my Racor w/water separator. I got some bad fuel(Flying J on 95) with water. Mileage went from 13 mpg to 8 mpg. I dumped both both water separators on the road no change. Called my NY and FL diesel mechanics while on the road. Both asked what type of fuel filters I was using. Mileage improved slightly to 10-11mpg. They both told me to only use Motorcraft(Racor manufacturer) or Racor. The Wix filters have a tendency to absorb the water rather had allowing it to separate out into fuel separators. When I got down to FL(Southeast Power in Tampa) a code showed up.
Replaced both filters with Racors. No problems towing now getting 13 mpg.
