Ya. I was just thinking of the next street rod project after I build the Tall T and thought a Y Block powered A roadster on '32 rails with a Y Block and a C-4 would be fun. But I hate solid lifters!! I'm sure many a Hot Rodder in the day dropped the "New Y Block 312" in his ride to replace the Flathead.
A better question might be: "Were any Y's ever built (or modified) with hydraulic lifters"?
No........It's been discussed (here, a lot in recent years) .........but I don't think there's any room in the block to "house" the larger diameter lifters.
There's not a lot of "meat" where the lifters are.....
Besides, most racer types LIKED "solid" lifters.
I LIKE the "noise"!!
But if you REALLY have your heart set on hydraulic lifters, give a call to john Mummert. http://www.ford-y-block.com/
I've heard from reputable sources that there were a few but good luck finding one. I have never seen one myself either in person, in pictures, or in literature and you know how "I've heard..." goes.
If you have the dough, a new block is likely to be available in the not too distant future that will accommodate hydraulic lifters. Plan on about $4000 just for the block.
As an alternative, the cousin to the Ford Y Block, the Lincoln Y Block does use hydraulic lifters. The down side to this is parts in general for the Lincoln are even harder to find than those for the Ford.
What don't you like about solid lifters?
