Head stud install?

question fellas, can I install head studs, without removing the head and replacing the gasket? Gaskets are fairly new already. What would be the proper way to perform this?

someone with more information will chime in..but,I had to pull a head (passinger side) on a fresh motor with head studs. It can be done but its a Bi**h,as far as the head gasket,we used new ones.I didnt want to have to do this twice.Honestly,It would have been easier to pull the engine out.

You can do it. Just do one bolt at a time. The back ones can be a little hard, IIRC most loosen the motor from the mounts and lower it some. You could also jack the cab up to get the extra clearance if you had a lift available.

When we did mine, we did them one at a time in the order of the torque sequence. No need to remove the head. Also, to reach the back ones, you unbolt the motor mounts and use a jack to rock the motor to one side.

Unless you're pushing 40+ psi of boost regularly, I don't think you need to worry about it.

My overall goal is 400 to 500 hp. I figure with that and the propane, I should hit it.

Just installed head studs on mine without removing the heads or motor. remove the motor mount bolts and rock the the motor up on each side you are doing the studs. It is a bugger of a job to do. But definitely doable. I was lucky to have some extra hands from some good friends who helped me. still using the original gaskets, 166K miles on them
