A very deep pounding for a Main bearing where as a rod is more of a rapping noise. Okay sound s like bunrt valves seats. Popping comes from hot molten metal like cinder like from a wood fire. As the compression gets lower their more unburned gas exh air being push pass the exh valves back in the intake that causes to pop back noticeable under loads like at the 50 mph and up range.. So sounds like your in need of hard seat & a lower end fix. Fix it before it really is unfixable. A good learning time of getting your hands dirty Doc. orich
Ouch I would buy a roller skate from them as 3 times gotten junk that did not fit or had to replace 3 yrs later, There rubber product stay away from. You'll have to have a machine shop install them and put in new exh valves also. You can't do this stuff. Here in Calif. most shops charge 700-$800 just for the heads. To rebuild them. And about 1800-2200 for a complete motor rebuild and up. I've got about 4500 in mind and I put it together oh and a learning helper my son..Dennis Carpenter, NPD, Mac's have much better rubber products then LMC you've been warned. Maybe you can rent a cherry picker to pull the motor and pull the motor out and see if a shop will come and pick it up take it to the a M-shop and bring back to you so you just reinstall it as you lack the know how of rebuilding it. But should have enough smarts to r&r the motor, I'm sure. I do understand having a bad back ,Ive been through 3 back surgeries myself. Only about 80% better now with a double fusion of L4 L5 & SI,S2..Been there done it...
Ha this new little laptop is getting the best of me, not counting my Meds..

Like Orich says, pull the engine...then put it on a stand and start dismantling...anyone who knows one end of wrench from the other can pull one apart. Take digital pix as you go along. With those compression numbers, sounds like you have a bad main bearing or three, damaged connecting rod and buggered valve train. There's a good book/CD out there on rebuilding a Ford big block FE. Given your situation/location, a rebuild would be cheaper than shipping in a new long block or trying to make a newer engine/tranny fit. Maybe you can find a mechanic with medical needs and do some barter of some kind.
