If you're using the short, front sump pickup, no. If you have a rear sump with the long pickup tube then yes, you do need to support the pickup or else eventually it will crack.
I am using the rear sump. would i be able to use the bolt from my 351/400m, and if not could i just go to a hardware store and get a high grade steel stud.

If the bolt is the same size as the bolt/stud, swapping them is no problem. I wouldn't try using a stud from the hardware store. Most studs or all-thread is GR2, you can get GR8 studs but be sure of what you're getting. Plus the diameter of the stud is much larger than the hole in the support tab, by the time you enlarge the hole to fit the stud there'll be no support tab left.
Let me know what engine you're working on and I'll see if I can locate a dealer that has the bolt in stock.
I looked up the part numbers for the two different bolts. The bolt for the 351W is 1/2"-13 bolt with a 3/8"-16 stud and an overall length of 4 11/16".
The 351M400 bolt is also 1/2"-13 and 3/8"-16 stud but with an overall length of 4 7/32".
So the 351M bolt is 15/32" (.46875") shorter than the 351W bolt.
The book only shows overall length and doesn't specify where the difference is. It could be the bolt, the stud length, the thickness of the hex, or a combination.
If the nearly half inch shorter length is entirely with the bolt I wouldn't use it.
I tried to find another bolt but no dealer or obsolete supplier shows any in stock.
The part number is D6TZ-6345-A Bolt, Main bearing. Last list price $13.57, dealer cost $8.14.
If you can't find the right bolt then I'd just leave it hang. I've torn into more than one through the years that was just left hanging because they had no bolt/stud and nothing ever happened. Trying to mix and match studs and different styles of bolts might just get you into trouble with the main cap, possibly leading to a bearing problem.
