ok i got a rear sump oil pan for my 460 into a 87 bronco project. and i got the new oil pump and pick up, now when i installed the pump, pick up i just took out the main bolt that the pick up bolts to and put it through the pick up and bolted it back on, and proceded to put every thing else back on, now i have learned there is a special main bolt with a stud on top of it. is this goin to be a problem if i leave it the way it is? cause i don't feel to exicted bout pulin it all apart again and getin the new bolt
vogey,
Sounds like that will effect the height of the pick up. I'd use some clay to check the clearance to the bottom of the pan. If it starts suckin air you'll wish you bought a 2 dollar stud.

if your pickup had a hole big enough for the main bolt to go through it most likely was intended to be that way, but one other thing when you put it in did you have to push the mounting tab up to the cap or did it lay up next to the cap without the bolt in it that will also tell you whether it is made that way or not. most of the ones that are intended to have the studded main bolt only have a 3/8" hole which is the size of the stud on top of the bolt. I have seen them both ways, and truthfully you only raised the pickup about 3/4 inch form the bottom of the pan if you were turning alot of rpms, and running a HV pump you might suck enough oil out of th epan to start sucking air but most likely not, but it could happen in an extreme situation, you know how and where you drive just keep that in mind
