Help installing new tailgate handle

Just received my new chrome tailgate handle and plate from LMC. Trying to install I got the rods hooked up but there is no spring action. The handle just moves freely up and down. Rods are hooked to the latches just fine. Where did I go wrong? Help would be appreciated. THX David

Yeah, my 69 latch is a side-pull too...left edge pulls out. I think the up latches came out in 71 or 72, but may be wrong.

The two end latches are spring loaded. The 1973 and up the opening latch lifts up to open. The 1964-72 have a pivot bolt for the opening handle that bolt on to with rods that pull the latch release that is spring loaded. No other spring shown..orich

if your lever moves up and down, you may have the wrong one bud.

C4TZ-99431B82-A .. Styleside Tailgate Handle (does not include the mounting plate).

C4TZ-99431D78-A .. Styleside Tailgate Handle Mounting Plate.

C4TZ-99431D76-A .. Styleside Tailgate Latch-includes Spring / Right/Left is the same.

Applications: 1964/66 F100/250 2WD * / 1966 F100 4WD * / 1967/72 F100/350.

Did'ja know (prolly not): September 1966, Ford obsoleted the 1964/66 Styleside tailgate (C4TZ-9940700-A *), replaced it with the 1967 (1967/72) Styleside tailgate (C7TZ-9940700-A) for use as a service part replacement.

ALL the mounting hardware is the same! The only difference is that the 1967/72 tailgate's FORD letters are a slightly different shape and are surrounded by a raised ovate scallop line.

btw: The tailgate supports aka scissors aka straps (C4TZ-9944400-A) are the same thru 1979 as are their rubber bumpers (C4TZ-9944482-B).

* 1964/65 F100/250 4WD, 1964/66 F350, 1966 F250 4WD used the 1957/60 Styleside Beds, so the tailgate is not the same as C4TZ/C7TZ-9940700-A.

THX to all responces, i guess my post did not explain my problem clear. The plate and handle are the right ones. The problem is when the rods are hooked up there is no spring tenison on the handle. I think I need to depress the latches then hook up the rods. Or maybe I have the rods hooked to the wrong hole. THX David
