I got an 88 ranger with a 2.9 efi 4x4 and im getting around 5 miles to the gallon. I cut the muffler off but left the headers and cat on. Im wondering if anyone can give me any ideas of what else i can check to make it run more lean. Thanks
there are alot of factors that make the computer run the mixture lean. Clean everything and run some seafoam through it. And I'm not sure about your particular setup but in most cases of computer controlled engines, running without a muffler really won't help much.
i would agree on tomw about the pressure regulator. i have a 1991 ford ranger with a 3.0L and the diaphram inside the regulator busted and was allowing fuel to be sucked into the intake thru the vacuum hose. Try pulling off the vacuum line from the top of the pressure regulator.. if there is any fuel coming out of the regulator, you will need to replace it. I was averaging about 6mpg when it happened as well. the regulator only costs about $15.
Need a new t-stat? Temp sensor - air and/or coolant? MAP sensor working?
The fuel pressure regulator on the 4.0 can stick and then get free, causing spikes in the fuel pressure that are too high to compensate by cutting the injector flow time. Don't know if that happens on the 2.9. If the engine doesn't get to temperature, it will use more fuel, ditto if the computer thinks its cold outside or the coolant is not warmed up.
