Steering Box Rebuild Question
I am hoping that one of the specialist parts guys or someone who has done this job can help with some info.
The Box I'm working on is a Saginaw on a '65 F100. My question is about the thin metal plug in the housing at the end where the lower shaft bearing cup is set. It seems like such a simple made item that it would be used in other applications and available from more places than the old Ford parts bin. Any suggestions?
Also, when the box failed I found a retaining clip and a mangled piece of what I took to be the remnants of the bearing cage in the pile of grease. I don't see any groove for the clip and was wondering about that.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Common saucer plug, used on a gazillion applications, waltz down to an autoparts store and buy the puppy.

No retaining clip is shown in the steering gearbox as part of C2AZ-3571-A. The steering shaft and worm contains 50 ball bearings, but there's no clip shown or listed.
The whole enchilada is shown here in an exploded view. 1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 35.1, Page 2 UPPER diagram.
I haven't figured out how to put a picture in a message yet. I did a Google search and found something similar which should be good enough for you to 'get the picture' if you click on this link:

Mine looks slightly different and is a perfect fit for the hole at the end of the housing. I don't know exactly how much pushing the grease does on this plug but maybe a groove wasn't needed.
Again, thanks to the Ford Guru!!
Contact Green Sales Co. (greensalescompany.com ~ help number: 513-731-3304) ask them to scan and email you the parts catalog pic referenced in post 2.
I bought this truck in New Mexico so anything is possible as far as replacement parts and 'make it work' mechanic-ing. Maybe it was done as a belt and suspenders operation.
The ID Tag number should have been included in the first post so I'll fix that now:
HCD B 1
5G1 6B
Meanwhile, I can hear some waltz music in the near distance.....
Thanks again.
Tag code HCD-B = C5TZ-3504-D .. Steering Gearbox Assembly / 1965 F100/250 2WD.
5G1 = Assembled the first week (1) of July (G) 1965 (5).
Tag codes SMA-E, -H & -K = Same steering gearbox used: 1966/72 F100/250 2WD, 1967/72 F350.
Strauss' ditty is the overture music heard during the opening credits in Stanley Kubrick's film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I'll do what I can to keep it on board for a while longer.

All the best to you.

I am going to measure and see if a thicker plug will fit in the space allowed for the box.
