good day one of my trucks is leaking water from the rear cast plate on a 79 s/c with a 460 after removing the w/p front cover i seen the timeing chain/gears wore out and need to be changed out i see a few noisy or quiet gear drive sets for these engines has any one used this set up? any pros/cons over the chain set up? just seeing if these last a bit longer

I have never had a problem with the double roller and chain. Never used the gear drive.

Put a quality double roller in there. I had one in my Monte ss and guess what? It failed leaving me stranded and depositing fine particles that wiped my main bearings. I will never use a gear drive again...oh to be young and stupid lol

Only reason to go with a gear drive is if you like the whine.

NO! Listen to 1984montemaniac. There is a reason you only see these on race cars. Unless you are willing to inspect them every 1/8 mile, (lol) one little piece of trash can tear them up. Plus those small idler gears turn really fast. I have never heard anyone say they are worth it.

They seem to attract the wrong kind of attention. I used to have one in mine and most every time I got out of my truck somewhere, someone would come up to me and tell me my power steering pump was going bad. I'll say this too, I wouldn't put one in without degreeing it in.

My experience is with only one engine. It was so loud that you could not hear anything else that maybe going wrong with the vehicle. I helped remove it.

Well now that this thread is pretty much done can some one answer me a question?

If you put a gear drive one on would you have to put a totally different cam on it? So it could rotate backwards?
Or am I totally picturing this wrong?

No, they use idler gears so any cam can be used. Idler gears spin the opposite direction as the crank/cam.

I've never used one, and never would on anything other than a full race engine.

They're idler gears, so the two shafts would still rotate the same direction. It goes cam, idlers, crank when going top down. Since they're all external toothed, they all rotate opposite the way the gear they're touching is spinning. So it goes CW, CCW, CW. Still rotates the same way that it does with a timing chain.

I think the benefit of gear drives is that they are more accurate/no slop, the old school drag racers in the 60's used them alot......

see the whole reason i asked this question a lot of hd engines use this set up and get hundreds of thousands of miles out of them with no issues eg cats, cummins ect and for the life of me cant see why these would be any different and theres a lot more stress on the top end than any gasoline pass car motor would ever see in its life eg jake brakes , high compression ect i only seen one of these set ups in a shop years ago on a 460 being put back together and the mech swore by them thats all he ever used and as long as the ilder gears were installed correctly with the helical gears the right way and you liked the wineing noise they would last forever what kind of issues or damage have you guys seen from these?
