Hi all,my dad just bought a new to him 2008 Ranger today. 3.0 liter 5 speed 2WD. How are these beasts and how do they stand up. Btw it has 89XXX kms and alloy wheels.
The 3.0 is a cute little motor, that should never have been put in the Ranger. It's great for going downhill, horrible for going up hill. Not the world's worst motor, but definitely not as good as a 4.0.
However, I will say that my 3.0 has been pretty good to me. Just make sure you replace the cam synchronizer if it starts to chirp.
The 3.0 will last a long time given minimal maintenance. I've got almost 250,000 on mine in a Sable. I think the final drive ratio used in the Ranger may not be the best, leaving the 3.0 running at the 'wrong' rpm while cruising, and straining when accelerating. It *should* get excellent gas mileage as long as you realize you are trying to drive a 4X4 sheet of plywood through the air. {slight exaggeration, but the Ranger is not terribly aerodynamic and the drag coefficent must not be very good}. Keep the speed down, and you should get very good mileage.

well hes not gonna be loading it, but its a sport with means 4:11's right, can anything be done to aleveiate that like taller tires. Also i guess PO took hitch and running tubes off as they are not on the truck? I thought the hitch and tube steps are part of the sport package

The tube steps were an option. I'm not sure about the hitch.
The factories on this are 235s and dont rub but all i was wondering if a 30 or 31 inch tire would fit. The trucks got 411s and just thought it runs a little fast on the hwy was looking to get the rpms under 22 or 23..... just some more musings
