Trying to determine the difference between inner fender #D4TZ-16054-A and D9TZ-16054-A. Also inner fender #D3TZ-16055-a and D9TZ-16055-A. I have both sides original to my 76 F-250 4WD. I picked up 2 nos inners that begin with the D9TZ. There is obvious suttle differences between the originals and the nos ones. Is there a cut-off period where one replaced the other. Can I use the newer ones. Any info appreciated. Chime in Mike or Numberdummy or anyone else for that matter.
I know the visual difference in the later ones are they have "crumple zones" engineered into them. The later ones have four "dimples" in the reinforcement that runs from the firewall forward. These are so the fender will crumple there first in a collision and absorb crash energy and not transmit it to the passenger compartment. The hood also has a coresponding notch in the internal reinforcements.
The lower part of the panel also has more of a right angle bend on the earlier panels. There are other subtle differences.
The Ford parts catalog says D4TZ-16054-A replaced by D9TZ-16054-A (5/79). The D3TZ-16055-A was replaced by D9TZ-16055-B not "A". It shows the "A" for F100-150 4WD but the F250 takes the "B".
I'm not sure what the differences are between the "A" and "B".
There can be stamping differences where the steering box is for different trucks. In most cases you can use any inner fender. You might need to do a little work to get the wrong one to fit but nothing major.
