Replace A/C compressor

Compressor finally quit after 159K. Could an A/C guru please educate me as to what all is involved with installation of a new one ? I'd like to get a couple of quotes from some local shops and do not want to get burned, or, if I can, replace it myself.

Is the compressor shot? I've never done it, but you can put new clutches in it.

The hub engages but the compressor shaft will not turn. Hub is burned up now.

You could replace the compressor yourself, it's not a bad job, but if the system is still fully charged you'll have to have it evacuated before you unhook the manifold at the compressor. Then, unless you have access to a vacuum pump and gauges you'll have to take it some where to have a good vacuum pulled on the system and recharged after you replace the compressor.
