Hi guys, I'm just about midway through my 400 build and was wondering what the proper way to break it in is? So far i've decided to use a break in oil with zddp in it. Use lots of assembly lube on the cam and run it at 2000 rpm for 20 mins. Am I missing anything? Any help or info would be appreciated. Thanks.
try this website-involves a controlled aggressive break in rather than a drive it like a granny for the first 1000miles etc. and not the drive it like you stole it method either. I can see the logic and it matches with my uncles mechanics method.
did my engine this way and other than a pair of failed head gasket's that I will put down 50/50 to poor installation on my part and poor gaskets, very happy. Was put onto the site by a guy who rebuilt a 400 here in OZ. no probs.
X2 on the prime. I used a small 3/8 socket (or was it 1/4"?) that fit the oil drive shaft and ground a drive on a piece of applicable key steel from my tool box. Taped the socket to it so it wouldn't fall in. Just remember to go backwards, drill must have reverse, and go until oil comes out the rockers. Plug a gauge in for kicks just to see what you have.
Also dont just leave the engine at 2K rpm, throttle it up and down a little, but as you have read dont let it idle for any amount of time.
