i'd like to prime my 400's oil system. my brother has a dist. he took the gear off to prime his 302. would that work on a 400? i also have an extra dist from another 400. could i use that w/out ruining it?
As d79f150 said, use the tool. Some stores will(Autozone for one) will let you use the tool for a deposit and refund the money when you bring it back. That is what I did. Also remember that the dizzy runs counter clockwise, so you will need a reversable drill. When I did mine it pulled the drill fairly hard once it started to pump oil. I left the valve covers off to see that there was oil coming up through the push rods etc.
you can also use a 1/4 in drive extention and i dont remember the size of socket but its like a 3/8 or around there. make sure you tape the socket on and it should work. i did this before and had no problem but it also wouldnt be hard to have a big problem. key point dont lose the socket in the engine
what he said. you can have it done before you'd get to the store and get the stupid look like you have 2 heads from the kid. you need a rather thin-walled socket, i ground one down special for the job. wrap it with a piece of tape to the extension or speedhandle if you're worried about the socket falling off(tape doesn't stick to oily tools, carb or brake cleaner works great). the speedhandle is the best method i've found. spin up some pressure in the pump, then turn the crank some and spin up the pressure again. repeat until you're tired. i make sure that i have oil to every rocker before the coil wire goes on. unless you like that really expensive squeaking noise X16 when you start it? seen it too many times!

I like it!!! -hehe
I use that white lithium assy lube on everything unless there is some special lube for the part.
A "slim" socket works great. I was playing with my torch one day and brazed a cheap socket to a cheap extension. Ground the outside down. Then threw it in the tool box. I may be able to find it when the time comes... The heat from the brazing ruined it for use as a socket but it will work to prime a pump. I use an electric drill. I am not coordinated enuf to use a spinner!
I get that two heads look all the time. Kind of similar to the deer in the headlight look. Remember, If they can't find it on their 'puter it don't exist.
