Mileage meter

'94 F150 with the inline 6. Does anyone have any experience with fuel usage meters? I have one on my boat that is tied into my GPS. It gives very accurate readings of fuel usage in mpg. Problem is, it was pretty expensive and I don't want to spend that kind of money on the truck. Are there any decent inexpensive products out there?

On another matter (I probably should post this somewhere else) how do I insert a small picture of my truck at the beginning of my message like so many of you do? Showing my computer ignorance here.

Thanks

If you want to add a picture to your signature you need to use one of the free photo hosting sites(like Photobucket.com). Once the picture is saved, you can copy/paste the "address" to your post or signature line. Works really easy once you try it.

You can also save it to the FTE gallery and do the same thing. Just not sure once on here that you can use that picture elsewhere?

As for fuel meters?? I'd just use your odometer, fuel reciept and a calculator. Really easy and much cheaper then anything else. I know the new vehicles now have that kind of stuff built in, but personally really don't see a real need for it? If you want to know if you are driving "too hard"(ie: using too much fuel), then put a vacuum guage in and watch it move around. More vacuum=less fuel=better mileage. Used to be a popular add on back in the 70's.

Yeah, I know how to figure fuel economy the old fashioned way. I'm also old enough to remember the vacuum gauges. A vacuum gauge does a good job in relative numbers. Problem is, I'm kind of **** when it comes to hard facts & numbers. The flow meter on my boat (a 43 foot trawler) has paid for itself over the years by showing exactly where that sweet spot is, how much fuel I have left, how much I've used, my range before a fillup is needed (so I know if I need to get fuel right away at the higher price or I can wait until I get to a cheaper place), if I need a tuneup because I'm burning more fuel than normal, etc. A boat the size of mine gets 2 to 3 nautical miles per gallon, though, so the payback time is quicker. That's why I said I want a fairly inexpensive unit. When fuel was cheaper it wasn't that big of a deal but at today's prices it becomes more important to me.
