Flow is only one measure of filter performance. I think that K&N and Wix are good enough filters, but not just because they have good flow rates.
I always seen that Fram filtered such small particles out of oil. This to ment some pretty good oil restriction. Which wouldn't be good if you had a dirty engine.
I never use anything but Motorcraft Oil filters on my Fords, everytime I do I hear lifters click'n on a cold start.
on my 56, with 371C, especially, so I run a #300 Motorsraft shortyfilter and never have that click, even when the car is parked all winter.
As far as the F150, I sure the dealer would not warrenty the engine if something was to happen to it with another type filter on it.
I had the worst oilpressure even on a cheby motor I had w/Fram.
One time I had a Fram filter on and my oil pressure skyrocketed after about 500 miles, not because of flow but that the filter was restricting flow so badly.
what I ment to say , that when I don't use Motorcraft, I hear lifter click'n on cold start.
I know yur right about refusing claim as long as it is OEM quailty, but from my way of think'n about some service writers that have to much to say about way they want to pick your pocket, they always treat customers as if your just a customer and they are smarter then you.
I have had similiar experiance with Fram filters. The engine gets awful noisy when I use one. Definitely check out the filter study on mini-mopar net. This is another good forum with a bunch of gear heads. The nod seems to go to purolator or one it's clones. If you are looking for good but inexpensive then check out the Tech-line at Wal-mart for 1.99 (Champ Labs; they used to make lee filters ) Napa Silver, a Wix for about 2.50, Proline from Pep-Boys ( purolator clone). Definitely check out the survey though lots of good info.
I think the concern over cold start up engine noise with a Fram filter is valid. Their nitrile ADV is simply too weak. I had a similar experience with my E150 van. It was so bad I darn near took it in to the dealer before I learned it might be a filter problem. Hard to beat the Motorcraft filter on a Ford.
Then I bought an Escape and read this in the owners manual: "If a replacement oil filter is used that does not meet Ford material and design specifications, start-up engine noises or knock may be experienced. It is recommended you use the appropriate Motorcraft oil filter (or another brand meeting Ford specifications) for your engine application."
That's a heck of a lot stronger statement than a bunch of guys like us venting on the internet.
I like using OEM filters. Motorcraft in my Ranger and AC/Delco in our Cavalier. They are good quality for the money and look great in a warranty claim.
