I've always used Napa Gold 1515 oil filters with excellant results. I've just noticed on the updated version filter theyre using TO3 "Glass Enhanced" Media so with this it just makes it all much better.
the newer filters have the same look just the packeging is differnt.
I'm so ashamed...I ALWAYS change my own oil & filter, but I've been using Fram filters. A few years back Consumer reports did a study on oil & filters, & Fram did well. I guess that was then, & this is now.
With regards to the ADV & startup, mt X with the 4.0 SOHC has the filter mounted upside down, so it can't drain out. Does this make a difference?
P.S. I went out 2 dayss ago & bought a couple Motorcraft filters. I also cut open a Fram to see for myself.
I think if you kno someone who has oil heat , they could use them to filter #1&2 heating oil. it won't hurt to use them there, except on a cold winter night, when the furnace shuts down for lack of oil flow.
What did the filter look like inside? it probaby did a good job of dirt collect'n, at one time there was a kit on the market that used toilet paper rolls, I wonder what happened to that bright idea?

I worked at an Autoparts store for about 2.5 years. In that time we sold Motorcraft, AC Delco, Lee and Fram. Guess which brand was the ONLY one we ever had complaints about? FRAM. People would come in saying that their filter collapsed from getting clogged, getting the engine ticking noise, Missing the rubber seal etc. I will NEVER use a Fram filter. I used to when I as a teen but learned my lesson after a VW I has started haveing a strong lifter tap on startup and for about 10 min of running. After a friend recomended swapping the filter the tick was gone! Glad I know better now though. Watch out for the quick change oil places. Some of them use Fram filters that are branded for their chain or brand of oil used.

My guess is that the idea got flushed down the toilet along with the paper.
I replaced my Fram with a Tech Line from Wal-Mart (Lee Filter; Champ Lamps) after reading all these postings. Noise went away. As far as everyones comments regarding Motorcraft and AC Delco. These are both Purolator clones which explains why they work so well.
Hey, I have oil heat...but I don't think I'll be using a fram to filter it anytime soon.
The filter that I cut open was unused...and it's got cardboard on both ends of the pleated filter part. Kinda cheesey.
i realized too late on my last post that I spell like crap, so I'll try it again. The filter on my 4.0 SOHC faces up, so it holds all the oil. Does that make a difference when considering the quality of the
Anti drain valve?
I've been buying Fram @ BJ's (love the name) - 3 for $7.99. I'm going to return the 3 pack I just bought for my wife's Honda, & go buy the filter @ the dealer.
I remember a filter ..think it was called Castle, or something like that. It was made differently, not a pleated paper, but something like cotton batting, or drier lint, I don't know.
I remember the toilet paper one, too. One of the links you guys mentioned, to the site that shows studies about filters & additives also has something about a filter that uses a paper towel roll. Says they use it for commercial vehicles & such. Sounds similar to the toilet paper roll to me. Only bigger.
If you use synthetic oil, like they recommend for hondars, you don't have to worry about fram filters because synthetics don't get thicker with age like dino oil. Syn also will seep through any leak in your motor so the fram filters don't block anything.
I started using Mobil 1 in my explorer, but I havent switched over her car yet. It is a lot more expensive, but she doesnt put many miles on her car. I usually change hers every 2000 miles, because it's like 5 months already.
It is a great car - the Accord. Should last forever.

I used Mobil 1 synthetic oil with Fram filters in my '86 Bronco 2. The bottom end of the motor went out. I blame the fram filter. I am also currently rebuilding a carburetor for my truck because of a fram fuel filter. Not argument, just facts.
99% of all fuel filters come from fram and they can't all be that bad. I would never recommend using synthetic oil in any vehicle that does not recommend it. I would blame Mobil 1 synthetic first.
Fram is junk, especially on a beater engine like my 360. Some times it wouldn't have enough oil pressure to start, it would just clatter, and make this cha-chang cha-chang chugging pounding kinda noise and die. I slapped a napa on there one day, and viola, the oil problem on cold startup goes away.
I agree that Fram filters are junk. They are somewhat dangerous to put on your motor. Fram filters are of sad quality. Wix is the only filter that goes on my motor. They function better than any other filter on the market.
