I've been searching but haven't really found much on this. Does anyone have a good write up on how to build your own y-pipe on a 5.8L 4x4?
I am thinking about doing a cat back exhaust, hollowing out my cats, and building a y-pipe. I've heard you can build one for around 80-100, which sounds alot better than $250-$350 for an after market one.
go and do a search on fullsizebronco.com, there's a good one there.
however i do not suggest hollowing out the cats, the exhaust expands rapidly, and cools down. thus loosing essential velocity (and unless they are getting plugged from a horrible running engine they really don't hurt anything)
I will have to check around on fullsize bronco then. I don't visually have to have a cat, I figured it would be just as easy to hollow them out than replace them.
on my 92 i cut behind the first cat and hollowed out the cat and then added pipe and a glass pack and ran it out the back, that way i didnt have to build a y pipe. and it sounds great.
some 2 1/4" tube, 3 pieces of 2 1/4" 90* mandrel bends, premade Y, some of 3" tube, 1 3" 90* mandrel, assorted hangers. 3" in/out muffler. Welding IS required.
If you're keeping the stock manifolds, then cut the cats off so you still have the tube flange comming off the manifolds. I am guessing it is 2 1/4" diameter tube so using some 2.25 tube and the bends, cut & fit the peices together on each side making them join together at the Y on the passenger side. Tack weld them as you go. Weld up the tubes once you have your Y built. Use the 3" tube to go to the muffler, then out with the 3" 90* elbow to the front of the rear tire. If you have 1 O2 sensor then put it in the Y. If you have 2 then one in each downpipe. You may need new bungs.
I used a walker h-pipe for a heavy duty f250. ( pn 40585 for e4od trans ) or (pn 40572 for others) . The cat is kind of expensive for this application (magna flow 93336) , so i loosely copied the factory design . I used a gasket ( walker 31530 ) for a template to make a flange out of 3/8 plate and split a piece of 3" pipe to make the y , then added a universal 3" high flow cat from ebay. It does hang down a little because it goes under the trans crossmember, I'm sure some people would not like that. I ordered online from advance auto and used promo codes and had it shipped to the house for free( over $75). I did this on my f250 but I believe it will fit a 150 and intend to try it on my 150 this summer.
