differnece between CA and 49 state CAT

Im in real need of catalytic converters for my truck, but everything i find is 49 state and not CARB compliant. What is the difference between the two. Im trying to pass CA smog, and im trying to get away from spending the $1200 at ford

Thanks

Go to the Magnaflow website and read the Ca law on converters.
Magnaflow is the only aftermarket vendor to get C.A.R.B. approval.
After you read the law, you will see how stupid it is when they specify all the dimensions for everything instead of just approving if the assembly meets emsissions standards.
You must understand what world your living in in that state that is going broke trying to run everybodies life down to the inch.
Good luck.

Curious how/why you've determined this? Tested emissions? Rattle?

Thanks.

Agreed, you can read the CARB law there. I understand they are attempting to control the high emissions particularly in the LA area, but I think they are OCD.

Your statement about Magnaflow being the only brand with CARB approval is false. I know for a Fact that Eastern Manufacturing, Imco, Walker, AP, and several others have CARB certifications and are all currently offering CARB legal converters.

The catch, and I'm not sure how clearly the law spells it out, is that they have to have a certification for your Year/Make/Model. If no one makes a certification for your Year/Make/Model, your stuck going back to the dealer, or moving out of California, or getting another truck, whichever comes first.

I'm sorry you think I said something false. Hope you forgive.
The point was that not all makes and models cat offerings are CARB approved within any year and model as you can see by researching the cat vendors listings.
That was the intent.
I had already looked at this awhile back when this came to light.
Things could always have changed between then and now.
As well, the OP has also found this to be true except he may have not looked at Magnaflow listing.
In Pa and NJ there is now a move to kill emissions testing because out of the hundreds of thousands of cars tested over the last 5 years, less than 5 percent were found to fail for the cost of the test, cost of the test equippment, the long lines etc, just to record what a scanner tells you and send the 'official' report to the state via telephone line.
It is a testement to how well the control programs and hardware do the job on the vehichles within present mandates, and to keep emissions levels down over the old way of tail pipeing the test from years ago.
Problem is this board and other exist partly because the systems are so complex when it come time for owners to try to do the repairs without knowledge of what they are really working with.
Here on this board, the vehichles are now at least one version behind in control systems 'based on' EPA regs.
On the shelf waiting is automatic observation along the road side, by satelite and other devious means such that you can one day get a notice in the mail your vehichle has been found out of limits and faulty without you even knowing about it, before hand and to report your efforts to effect repairs within a time frame or ???? will happen..
Of course it's a political hot potato or it would have been forced in long ago..
Best as always.

No, unfortunately you just have to check the catalog listings for each manufacturer, and see if they have something for you. Eastern's offerings are limited to most Pre-OBD-II models, and a handful of Toyota and Honda applications that are newer.

Unfortunately CARB owl is to either force you to buy an expensive unit where they get a piece of the pie through certifications, or to buy a newer vehicle.
