OK I just bought the truck and did not know when the oil was last changed, so I wanted to be safe and change the oil. I went to the local farm supply joint and got this:
I then just now read the tech post and saw that the oil needs to be CJ-4 rated. I looked on the bottle and CJ-4 is not listed. Am I in a dangerous place? Should I change it now again or wait till the 5k mark and get the right stuff next time?
There's a decent chance it would do no harm. But of course there's also the chance that it could cost thousands in damage. If it doesn't say CJ-4 DON'T DO IT!!!
A good way to check out oils and whether they're actually licensed by API is right here: API EOLCS . Any reputable company is apt to be listed here with their listing of engine oils and API certification ratings.
Blain's Farm & Fleet does not show up on this site. Motorcraft and the company I sell for, Archer, do under the brand search, among many others.
Very interesting discovery as well. On this website, popular Shell Rotella is not listed among CJ-4 licensed products.
