Exclamation EGR cooler weekend

Been dreading this day for months. EGR cooler is leaking & when I start her up in the morning she sounds like she is compressing coolant then I get a fat cloud of white smoke when she starts although I may have added only 1/2 gallon of coolant in 6 months. So oil cooler, EGR delete, STC fitting, stand pipe/dummy plugs, upgraded turbo drain & supply, etc so probably going to have many questions over the next couple days so I just want to thank in advance for any help & support members may extend to me. Wanted to ask should I start a new thread for every question I may have or can I just compile on this thread? Just drained the oil & retrieved exactly 12 Qts when I put 15 in 5,000 miles ago. I dont have any oil leaks so question #1 is it normal to burn 3 qts of oil in 5K miles?

You could put them here...or search for the issue your up against and post in the most active thread. Not sure how quick you'll find the solution. I'm looking forward to the oil cooler I'm looking at doing here in a couple of weeks.

Was the truck sitting flat on the ground? You should have gotten out of it what you put in...unless your oil cooler has ruptured and is pumping oil into your coolant. Check the degas bottle to see if it looks like a chocolate milkshake.

Though I guess it could have burned it...but 3 qts is almost 20% of the total oil volume for the 6.0L engines.

Thanks Zhilton! Yes it is flat ground. Just drained about 3 gallons of coolant out & it looks like new.

That's a great point you bring up. The more places to lose the oil. The less 3 qts seems

If you can't find an answer for the oil loss, you might want to pull the charge air cooler and see how much is in it.

Thanks for the idea Mark. I pulled both CAC tubes yesterday & both were dripping oil. My 3 qts are probably in the air cooler. I'm definitely researching the CCV mod as I type this.

That's ALLOT of vapor/blow by if you lost 3 quarts in just 5k miles. But anything is possible I reckon.

Yes I Agree

When the truck is at Idel and you pull the oil filler cap off does it feel like its venting pressure out???

There should be no positive pressure there really should be a Touch of vacuum at the oil filler cap

Im shure some already said to check the down pipe how does that look????????

Never mind on my last ??????

this would have been a good spot to see oil compared to the alternatives now

All I can think of now is the Coolant going into cylinders causing Great cylinder pressure and some of this pressure is blowing threw to the crank case causing the blowby

worn piston rings would be another thing or scared cylinder wall maybe a cracked Head

but 3qts per 5k miles is alot to lose

Do you have a drip off the bellhousing

From what I understand, a turbo can also leak oil into the compressor section as well as the turbine section (and if so, it will show up in the CAC system).

At what point would it start to "feed it's self" and thus wouldn't need the diesel fuel...but would burn the motor oil? I know there's a term for this (run-away comes to mind)...when a source of "fuel" is created from a leaking seal. I've seen what happens to the yellow motors when this happens...scary stuff.

I'm thinking out loud at this point...but I guess the inter-cooler slows/cools the oil down enough that the engine is unable to burn enough to keep running even without diesel fuel? Not that I'm volunteering my engine for this...but I'm wonder if a stock 6.0L could have a run-away on motor oil?

If it gets hot enough, it can self sustain on oil, but from what I understand, the oil usually will have a lot of fuel dilution with it to start that process.

I would not be resting well until I understood why so much oil was lost so quickly!
