Bumper Safety Chains

I have an issue of attaching safety chains to the hitch. When I have a locking hitch pin in place there is no room to attach the safety chain unless I remove the lock. Am I the only one with this problem? Is there a readily available solution?

Yes, attach two clevis' to the hitch and leave them attached. Then hook up the chains to the clevis. Be sure the clevis' are rated for the trailer max capacity or the DOT will have your hide and wallet.
OR
remove the lock each time like I have to do. It's a PITA, but I don't want the clevis on my truck all the time. If you use the clevis option, put some never seize on the threads and coat them with Fluid Film to keep them looking nice.

I have 2 cleavis attached. They work great. They are rated for 10k each. My TT is 9k so I think I'm covered.

Love that idea. I struggle with hooking them up all the time. Question....where do you get clevis rated that high?

Edit: And how do you prove to DOT if stopped they are rated that high?

Scratch first q... Google is your friend.......found. Still great idea...

They are usually stamped right on the clevis. Seriously use never seize on the threads. They lock on you really fast and then you need a torch to get them off...I know because I had to torch my last set off. Any Farm store will likely stock them.

I do fight the same issue but I have never been unable to hook them up and I use a hitch lock. It's just a tight fit sometimes.

The clevis is a great idea though. I do use spring clips for the break away cable.

I also use the spring clip for the break away cable. Got that idea off of RVNET. Works great.

Hook the safety chains starting from underneath and then up. Never had an issue this way.

Spring clip is a good idea for the break away cable.
