I have a 96 Ranger that won't start, as of this afternoon. Got me to work fine but wouldn't start after work and I had to pop the clutch to get it started. Once I had done that, it ran fine. It has battery power, lights, radio, etc. Also, the starter has power.
I can remote start it, i.e., turn key for power and apply power from the battery directly to the starter solenoid, and it will start.
I have replaced the neutral safety switch, which did not fix the problem. Then I replaced the ignition switch and still nothing.
I have checked fuses and they all seem to be good.
Any ideas as to what to do next?
This is a 1996, 4 cyl, standard transmission with 99,800 miles.
Thanks for any ideas or suggestions.
Does the starter relay close? Do you have power out of the replay? Is the cable ok, they can corrode inside and can't deliver the current needed for the starter. Does anything happen when you try to start it, do the lights even dim?
Thanks for the reply. The lights do dim when I turn the key, but nothing else happens.
The starter relay does not close; I am assuming that this means that power is not coming out of the relay. The cable (battery cable to the starter) has current, no noticeable corrosion. This is the cable that I am currently using to apply power directly to the starter so that I am able to continue driving it, so I would assume it is good.
I bought the truck used and I have not been able to find a manual locally, (Chilton's or otherwise), to see an electrical diagram, but I'm thinking there must be something between the starter relay and the neutral safety switch that is bad, like a fuseable link or another relay of some sort.
I'm totally stumped.
If you don't hear the starter relay close and you already replaced the ignition switch and neutral saftey switch, then I'd imagine it is your starter relay that is bad. Try taking the starter leads off, keying the ignition and seeing if you have voltage from the high side of the starter relay to ground.
If the lights dime the you must be appling power to the starter to cause a current drain to dim the lights, I'm wondering if there is some issue with the starter.
I'm pretty confident that the starter is good. When I put power directly to the starter, bypassing everything else, it fires right up;
I found a Chilton's repair manual, (finally) and spent some time going over the wiring diagrams.
I am beginning to think that my problem may have something to do with the anti-theft relay, which has been disconnected since before I bought the truck. When I bypass this relay, I can start the truck using the key. I can't imagine how it can be causing a problem when it has been, disabled for years, but that seems to be the area where the trouble is. I haven't had much time to really get into it so there could be something that I am missing.
Thanks for the help.....If I come up with a definitive answer, I'll post it.
