oil pan coating

I have read countless threads on oil pan rust........mine is toast. 2002 F-250 7.3. New pan is on the way and my big question which is kind of hit and miss on searching is what would be the best prep I can do while the pan is sitting on the bench. I will have close to $1,500 in this by the time its done and don't want to do this again so I would like to do anything possible to prevent rust any way i can. Heard great things about POR 15 but I think that is more for "rusting" metal and not a new part. Is there something out there better suited for this?

One great way to prevent it is to wipe it down frequentlywith with motor oil. I used to do that with a previous 7.3 i had, and the pan was spotless and shiny when i traded it in on my current truck. I did POR-15 on my current truck with good results.

The biggest problem is the paint gets damaged and then the rust starts. You can use the POR 15 to toughen it up. Bed liner works too! If you have some time, prep it and take it to a spray in liner shop. Usually they will spray small parts for a good price if you can leave it with them for a few days. Just keep the plug and bolt holes clear.

I just got done having my oil pan coated with Line-X. I think it will hold up to all kinds of debris/chemical bombardment underneath the truck. My local Line-X shop charged me $50 and they did a great job! Of course I brought in the pan already off of the truck and they were able to get it coated thoroughly..

I had my new oil pan powder coated before it was installed 3 years ago and it still looks like new.

I POR 15'd mine a couple of years ago and it looks terrible again. I followed the directions to a T and there is a lot of rust back on there again. Now I plow and salt in the winter and while we didn't have any this year, we had lots 2 years ago and good amount last year so the salt was tough on my truck. Overall, I am not impressed with the POR 15 job.

My Rust Bullet application I'd say 3 years ago is holding up good. Applied 3 coats back then and I got some rock-stone chips now that are showing rust again, in those chips, but overall happy with the results. I'm going to sand it down again and reapply my other small can. I got the starter kit, was more than enough, still have one can left.

I did the Rust Bullet also while it was still in the truck . What a pain to do because I could not cover the whole pan but got most of it along with some on my wrists . Done it last fall and so far it still looks alright . I put on 2 coats of the stuff . Just trying to prevent having to remove the pan .

Regardless of the coating, you need to inspect and reapply, if you live a salt-prone state. No corrosion protection (IMO) is a 'do it once and forget it' deal, if you intend to keep the vehicle a long time.

I have been going back and forth between POR-15 and Bed Liner. I'm leaning towards POR-15 because of cost, AND that it it had a temp rating.

I got to say, if my pan was off, the bedliner coating looks great, and funtional if the pan is preped right from the start. Nice job and pics from all that did this.

The truck is low miles (110,000), paid off, and don't plan on replacing any time soon (last few years has been about 5,000 miles a year) so i don't mind spending a little now to make sure i don't have to do this again.

That being said, im between powder coat and bedliner. I have a powder coat company that i have worked with before and there is also a local bedliner place. Im sure both will probably be great but would one be better than the other?

Thanks for all the help, I don't know what i would do with out this place.
